Governing Council dissolved, new cabinet takes over: coalition
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 06:30 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s US-installed Governing Council was dissolved, handing its responsibilities over to prime minister Iyad Allawi's government ahead of the June 30 transfer of sovereignty, a coalition official said.

"The Governing Council was dissolved this morning. The interim government will take over responsibilities as of today, until sovereignty is fully transferred on June 30," the official said Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

An aide to the new Shiite vice president Ibrahim Jaffari had said earlier that the dissolution would take place.

5. Smoke and mirrors.
Guess we need to wait a few weeks till the smoke clears.

This situation is SOP for BushCo. When Nancy Polosi stated that GW Bush was incompitent she was being polite.

6. You'll be able to tell by the newspaper headlines...
instead of it saying "Iraqi Governing Council Leader killed", it will now say "Iraqi Prime Minister killed".

7. Ap Headline: Iraq Council Disbands; CPA Still in Power
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A senior Bush administration official Tuesday hailed the appointment of a new Iraqi government and said the Coalition Provisional Authority would remain sovereign until June 30 to help the new leadership phase in.

The official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, also confirmed that the Iraqi Governing Council, in office since July, had voted to dissolve effective immediately to allow the new government to begin taking over its responsibilities.

He also said the new Cabinet would begin negotiations on the status U.S. and other coalition forces in Iraq (news - web sites) after June 30 "fairly soon."

"He also said the new Cabinet would begin negotiations on the status U.S. and other coalition forces in Iraq (news - web sites) after June 30 "fairly soon." "

I believe that, as pointed out here earlier, the SOFA and the 14 bases under construction will prove to be a pivotal point.

Or what you'd call a lithmus (sic?) test.
