Warner Bucks GOP Right On Probe of Prison Abuse
The silver-haired Virginian with courtly manners is a throwback to a forgotten era of congressional comity. But as he leads the Senate's inquiry into abuse of Iraqi prisoners, Armed Services Committee Chairman John W. Warner (R-Va.) also shows another side: a penchant for bucking his party, taking heat and surviving.

Warner says his committee has a "solemn responsibility" to discover what went wrong and to "make sure it never, never happens again." But some conservatives are angry about the high-profile televised hearings, saying the prisoner-abuse issue is overblown and threatens to undermine the United States' primary mission in Iraq (news - web sites).

As a result, the 77-year-old Virginian finds himself in an uncomfortable but familiar position: more at odds with the right flank of his own party on some critical issues than he is with Democrats.

"I think he should stop the hearings at this point; we've heard enough," said Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), a committee member. "We have a war to win, and we need to keep our talents concentrated on winning the war as opposed to prisoner treatment."

1. Yeah, if you stop us from torturing people . . .
How are we supposed to create more terrorists to keep the "war on terra" going forever, thereby insuring a constant and consistent flow of CA$$$$H??

Mr. Warner must be familiar with the Geneva Convention. Specifically Item #4 Prisoners of war are in the hands of the enemy power, but not of the individuals or military units who have captured them. Irrespective of the individual responsibilities that may exist, the detaining power is responsible for the treatment given them.

This is the reason why Congressional investigations are warranted. The abuse, by definition, cannot be the work of a "few bad apples" but is, by definition, an act committed by our country.

We are talking war crimes, Mr. Inhofe. Have you no decency, sir?

2. Since when did 'winning the war' become separated from how
prisoners and/or Iraqi people are treated?

3. here in Virginia, warner is getting a LOT of pressure, a LOT....

warner is no angel...he's a nasty reTHUGlican killer, war-monger and war-profiteer....but the pressure here in Virginia is REAL BIG....many retirees here have been POWs, and they are real mad....as Al Gore said yesterday, without a full release and full hearings and full removal of high level bushies, OUR soldiers are going to be tortured just like that if they become POWs....

everybody should be calling, emailing, writing to their congressional reps to put a LOT of pressure...DEMAND more hearings, more release of photos and reports, DEMAND that MEDICAL CARE and mental health care be provided to the VICTIMS...

have YOU emailed your congress rep today??

4. Be afraid!
quote

""I think he should stop the hearings at this point; we've heard enough," said Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.), a committee member. "We have a war to win, and we need to keep our talents concentrated on winning the war as opposed to prisoner treatment."

This man is very dangerous! He also claimed the pictures viewed by congress were simply more of the same. He is on BushCo payroll - be afraid.

8. I have seen him on the cable networks
and he is an arrogant, pompous *%*&* who doesn't believe these prisoners were abused. He is like Rush and the like believing any measures need to be taken to get info from the "enemy". This guy is scary and dangerous so please write letters, we need him out of office.

11. Inhofe has been sued by his church and some family members over
his misuse of funds. There was a long article about this when Inhofe ran for the senate by Frosty Troy in the Oklahoma Observer, an alternative bi-weekly paper published by a long-time OK reporter. Frosty said in the article that no OK newspaper would print an article or LTTE about this.

Some national group (Columbia Review of Journalism ?) rated Inhofe as the most incompetant senator.

Tulsa 1170am RW radio host Michael Delgiorno has asked his listeners to call the Tulsa County Democratic chairwoman and tell her they resent the petition opposing Inhofe's comments (when he defended torture at the Senate committee hearing). He gives a phone # for her; it may be her home #. This quote was a recurring promo to KFAQ, 1170am.

Delgiorno says they should also let her know that 'we' condemn the democrats and liberals who 'are undermining our Holy War in Iraq.'

Life in OK is really something else......

I thought the "war" was declared over and a success already? (evil sarcasm) :evilfrown:

This guy is saying we have a war to win and need to focus on that as opposed to those poor prisoners! (after all its not different than a skull and bones initiation right?!?)

Man does the current state of the US right now HURT like hell to me...:hurts:

14. Stop vote counting. Stop hearings on torture. Stop 9-11 commision..
Stop the Plame Investigation.
Stop idiots like Inhofe from calling the war crime in Iraq the war on terror. The final stop is the one that counts. Inhofe and his ilk deserve a jail cell for life. And that is putting it mildly.
Peace
Wildman

18. Also stop the Enron investigation, stop the Anthrax investigation...
Aw, just stop all investigations except if they are something about Clinton or some other Dem or even someone who has contributed to a Dem candidate sometime in their lifetime. Just investigate "libruls."

(Sarcasm)

15. My gut tells me that he may have known that they suppressed (hid)
2000 (?) pages of the T Report. They probably asked him if he thought they could get away with it. He might as well have his office at the Pentagon as far as I'm concerned. He may have silver hari, but his tongue is pure silver.
