‘The War on Terror Is Not Working’ MSNBC
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5069848/site/newsweek/

May 26 - Attorney General John Ashcroft called a press conference Wednesday "to announce developments in the war on terror." Intelligence from multiple sources, he said, indicates that "Al Qaeda intends to attempt an attack on the United States in the next few months." When and where the attacks are planned is not known. But how the U.S. and other governments conduct the war on terror groups like Al Qaeda is the subject, in part, of a new study released by Amnesty International.

1. Thought this was an interesting tidbit...
snipWhat do you recommend to U.S. and other troops in Afghanistan and Iraq now combating local resistance to their occupation? Is force never the best option?
Amnesty International is not a pacifist group, and we are not suggesting use of force is inappropriate in responding to armed groups. But using force alone in fighting the war on terror is like repairing a television set with nothing but a hammer. In addition to the use of force you need other forms of persuasion and other insights and greater wisdom. In Afghanistan, while of course there will be need for security there that can only be provided by military presence, there’s also a need to build a civil society. There’s a need to demonstrate to the larger percentage of the Afghan population that their interests are better served by pursuing a peaceful course that includes a civil society, democratic elections, a free press—all of the guarantees of economic welfare and political stability that come with a fully developed society. That can’t happen by force alone.snip

4. War on Terror?
Edited on Wed May-26-04 08:29 PM by Disturbed
Who made up this silly phrase?

Terrorism is a tactic not an entity.

No country on this planet will ever win a war on a tactic.

Why doesn't the US come clean and be honest for a change? Call it what is. War on Non-Compliant Nations. Bushco is waging war on any country that isn't in line with USA Corporate Capitalist domination. The war with Al Q seems to be lagging behind the Imperialist War on countries that don't tow the line with US Corps.

If Bushco would have spent the troops and $180 Billion on decimating Al Q. maybe this group wouldn't still be a major threat?

8. thanks for this link....usa torture goes way back....
Interesting, they cite our torture goes way back. Seems we have taught our enemies well. They then use those same techniques and are called barbarians..... We did it here to the Indians and the Blacks. We carry our tortures every where. It really is a sham and shame.

2. If I had a hammer
I can only think of one public policy area where the "hammer" approach might be effective.

Busting the corporations that are controlling our country into a thousand tiny shards.

5. The "war on terror" certainly is not working but ...
the "war of terror" by bush and his cabal is still going on, unfortunately. Keep the people afraid and all is possible seems to be their mantra. It is great to see the media, finally, calling it as it is.

7. That is the additional horror of this ploy by the bush cabal, imo...
children and the elderly will be scarred by this and for they don't care, don't even give it a thought. It is beyond disgusting.
