JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham, the first black leader of this city of 250,000 people, died of a massive heart attack Tuesday night. He was 60.

Cunningham, who also served as a state senator, died at 10:45 p.m., officials said.

Cunningham, considered a political maverick, had been mayor since 2001 and won his Senate seat last year.

"Such a big loss for the city," said Deputy Mayor Anthony Cruz. "So many good things we were doing."

1. I am amazed at how many "firsts" for minorities we are STILL
seeing at the dawn of the 21st century.

RIP. Sad news.

2. What would add insult to injury
would be if SchundLIAR took the opportunity to resurface in November so that he could keep his ugly mug on the front pages as he goes after McGreevey.

It was sad when Wellstone died, too. Coleman taking his seat made it a hell of a lot sadder. :(

3. Politicsnj.com says Schundler may run to replace Cunningham
In a special election, there is no primary so who ever gets the most votes win. So, there will probably be several democrats and if Schundler gets in he may be able to benefit off the split democratic vote. That is what he did when he first won in 1992. If Schundler ran though he wouldn't run for governor, most say since some were rumoring his run for mayor even before Cunningham's death.

There is also the possibility that Cunningham's widow will run. L. Harvey Smith, the city council president who ran against Cunningham in the state senate primary last week will probably become the interim mayor since the city council is controled by his allies. However, he showed in the 2003 primary that he may not be the best candidate in the world.

I also should say that Cunningham was certainly not my favorite person in the world, yet it is a shame that he had to die so young.
