2 recruits allowed to rescind enlistments

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Two Oregon National Guard recruits were allowed to rescind their enlistments yesterday after authorities learned they felt pressured by false advice that they could otherwise be sent to Iraq with the Army Reserve.
At least 10 other recruits who already had served in the Army but were eligible to be called back for duty in the Army Reserve have asked for their enlistments in the Oregon Guard to be reviewed for the same reason, said Guard spokesman Capt. Mike Braibish in Salem.
"Our guidance has been to respond as quickly and as promptly as possible," Braibish said.
Oregon was one of a number of "hot spots" around the country where Army Reserve recruiters contacted members of the Individual Ready Reserve with misleading efforts to get them back into the active reserve, Army Reserve spokesman Stephen Stromvall said from Fort McPherson, Ga.
Individual Ready Reserve status covers soldiers who no longer are on active duty but have not finished their military obligation and still can be called up to fill a need for their specialty.
