Poll: Bush Ratings Continue Slide

CBS says that his numbers are now the worst of his administration. Only 61% disapprove of his handling of Iraq.

ONLY 61%/. Either there must be 39% freepers or mentally ill. Am I repeating myself?

1. His approval rating overall is just 41 percent
That's the lowest in any poll I've seen so far. Josh Marshall says the internals are even worse than that.

2. This is probably about as low as it can go
Once you go below 40% you are dipping into the Republican base, and these people adore Bush.

I think he could maybe drop a few more points
but I suspect his rock bottom is the high 30s, as it was with his father.

4. Not so anymore
Chuck Hagel (R-NB) on CNN yesterday claimed there's a lot of resentment in the GOP and among the base.

5. How Low Did Nixon Get In August of 1974?
Edited on Mon May-24-04 03:02 PM by CO Liberal
Just before he resigned?

ON EDIT - Found the following through Google:

To show how intimately economic conditions affect presidential popularity and the ability of a president to weather scandal, it is worth reviewing the case of Richard Nixon. The Watergate scandal broke in June, 1972, well before the election, when police arrested the Watergate burglars. Yet in November, 1972 Nixon won reelection with an astonishing 60.7 percent of the vote. However, by August, 1974 just 24 percent of Americans still approved of his performance and he was forced to resign from office.

7. 24%
See http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/site/data/popularity.php

Don't get your hopes up for the numbers to go that low. There are a lot of Bush bots out there who believe he was chosen by God to be president, and those kinds of minds are hard to change.
