Portland man arrested in connection with Madrid terror attacks released

The Associated Press

PORTLAND — Portland attorney Brandon Mayfield, arrested in connection with the Madrid train bombings two weeks ago, was released from federal custody today.
His release came soon after Spanish officials said fingerprints found on a bag near the bombing site in Spain were that of an Algerian. U.S. authoritities had previously said prints on the bag, which contained detonators similar to those used in the March 11 bombings, were Mayfield's.

Holding a Koran and grasping his wife's hand, Mayfield walked out the federal courthouse in downtown Portland.

"I want to thank my friends and family for what I'll call a harrowing ordeal," said Mayfield.

5. spain said since day one that this wasn't the guy
but he was a moslem and he was critical of the war and of the duly appointed occupant of the oval office.

i'm glad he's out and i hope his life isn't too screwed by this crapola.

8. Brandon Mayfield should be the poster child...
...for the removal of the USA PATRIOT Act.

They went after this guy because:

1. He has known left-leaning views

2. He has converted to Islam

3. He played a minor role in the Portland case which the Justice Dept. largely lost.

This guy did NOTHING wrong. Ashcroft had the FBI on his ass for MONTHS.

12. So... we could live for a decade in our quiet little U.S. towns...
and be charged with bombing a train in Madrid just because the U.S. claims they found our fingerprint on a piece of evidence? And no one in authority questions this?

How easy is it to manufacture this sort of set-up? Very easy, I would think.

Imagine how simple it will be for the Bush administration to get rid of any one of us.
