Daniel Ellsberg visits SSU
Anti-war activist, source of Pentagon Papers leak, says Iraq war pre-planned
<snip>
In an appearance at Sonoma State University, Ellsberg said President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld tricked America into believing deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was a threat to world peace so they could wage a pre-planned war for money or oil.
The 73-year-old former government worker has remained a leading voice of the political left for three decades since he leaked the Pentagon Papers, a secret government history that undermined White House statements about the Vietnam War.
<snip>
Ellsberg said Bush and Rumsfeld knew Iraq didn't possess weapons of mass destruction -- the administration's long-held justification for war -- and shrewdly played on national grief after Sept. 11 to get support for military action against a country that wasn't linked to the terrorists.
<snip>
Speaking on the day of the first Abu Ghraib court martial, he said "I predict ... it really went to the top and was a broad policy. In my opinion, the wrong man is on trial."
