UNITED NATIONS - With the United States abstaining, the U.N. Security Council Wednesday demanded that Israel halt the demolition of Palestinian homes and condemned the killing of Palestinian civilians near a Gaza refugee camp.

The decision by the United States, Israel's closest ally, to allow the adoption of a critical resolution reflected the Bush administration's displeasure at Israel's foray into Gaza.

The final vote was 14-0, with U.S. deputy ambassador James Cunningham abstaining.

1. Unfortunately, Israel doesn't view the UN with much respect.
It is up to the moderate majority of Israelis to continue to push for a solution to this problem.

U.N. Envoy Calls Israeli Gaza Raids a War Crime

Wed May 19,12:47 PM ET Add World - Reuters to My Yahoo!

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations (news - web sites)' special human rights envoy for the occupied territories said on Wednesday that Israeli military strikes against a Gaza refugee camp were war crimes and a violation of humanitarian law.

"These actions constitute...war crimes...They also amount to collective punishment which violates both humanitarian law and international human rights law," said South African law professor John Dugard in a statement.

The envoy, who has often strongly criticized Israeli actions, said that the U.N. Security Council should consider imposing an arms embargo against the Jewish state just as it had against the apartheid regime in South Africa in 1977.

"The special rapporteur calls on the Security Council to take appropriate action to stop the violence, if necessary by the imposition of a mandatory arms embargo," he said.

6. "They" cannot deny the videotaped evidence of a war crime,...
,...and that is IF you accept this whole situation as a "war"!!! At minimum, such actions constitute a horrendous act against humanity!!!

I am just so freakin' angry at such violent, murderous aggression.

It's sick. SICK!!!!

Israel Vows No Let-Up in Gaza, 33 Palestinians Die
RAFAH, Gaza Strip (Reuters) - Israeli troops pushed further into the besieged Rafah refugee camp on Thursday despite international outrage at its killing of 33 Palestinians, many of them peaceful protestors, in the bloodiest Gaza raid in years.

The U.N. Security Council, convened at the behest of Arabs incensed at what they called Israel's "war crime" in Rafah, passed a resolution urging Israel to stop demolishing Palestinian homes.

Unusually, Washington did not use its veto to block the U.N. resolution, abstaining from the vote, and President Bush (news - web sites) urged restraint from Israel.

But Israel, whose forces stormed Rafah after seven soldiers were killed by local militants last week, was undeterred.

In the early hours of Thursday, troops pushed into the Brazil district of Rafah, right along the border with Egypt, where the army says it is seeking tunnels used by gun smugglers.

9. Egotistical imperialists rarely do give a shit,...
,...about anything other than themselves.

I hate arrogance and greed. Everyone suffers from occasional bouts of it,...and I hate IT everytime IT, arrogance and/or greed, takes control.

2. US abstains as Security Council votes to criticise Israel
UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council adopted a resolution criticising Israel's killings and house demolitions in Gaza, passed 14-0-1 after the United States abstained instead of vetoing the measure.

The resolution condemned the killing of Palestinian civilians in the southern Gaza Strip (news - web sites) refugee camp of Rafah, and called on it not to demolish houses in accordance with international humanitarian law.

~snip~

The United States has frequently used its veto power on the council to block resolutions that criticise its close ally, but Washington has been critical of the recent Israeli crackdown in the Gaza Strip.

"While we believe that Israel has the right to act to defend itself and its citizens, we do not see that its operations in Gaza in the last few days serve the purposes of peace and security," US deputy ambassador James Cunningham said.

But he said the United States could not back the resolution because it did not take sufficient account of the "context" of the military operation, which Israel says is aimed at stopping anti-Israeli attacks.

4. Okay,...US actually "abstained".
Hmmmm.

Have "they" finally recognized that the whole WORLD is viewing "them" as the enemy to humanity of the 21st century?

BAH!!!

8. Is the "pressure" finally starting to get to "them"?
I am pretty much convinced that whatever "conscience" they had was lost to their egos, long ago.

10. Not really, there were no penalties or sanctions in this resolution..
so, with a quick phone call to Sharon to say "I am up for re-election, gotta abstain but you know, wink, wink." If there is a resolution put forward from the Arab States, which I bet there will be, with penalties, the US will veto so quick it will make heads spin.

11. BUT,...at LEAST there was an abstain,...
,...no exercise of either a vote or a veto.

That is meaningful,...that is good.

Right?!!!!!

13. Apparently, Sharon & Likud are stepping up the killings.
Anyone object to that?

Did Hitler's evil JUMP into the souls of Bush and Sharon?
