Howard marginally increases Iraq commitment (Help is on the way!!)
The Federal Government has made a minor boost to Australia's Iraq commitment by sending two Federal Police officers to train members of the local Iraqi police force.

They will leave for the Middle East later this month to become part of a 13 country taskforce based at the Jordan International Police Training Centre.

Earlier today, Mr Howard also left the door open for a small increase in Australia's troop commitment to Iraq.

Customs Minister Chris Ellison says it is appropriate for Australia to help the war-torn country.

"This is the first time the Australian Federal Police would have made a contribution to the rebuilding of Iraq," he said.

2. Feel sorry for the policepersons' family
They have to deal with their partner going to Iraq, miss Christmas/Significan religious festival, the Election (probably Labour supporters anyway) and being hated by both the police trainees, as well as the insurrgents (ooh sorry Terrorists) who are targeting police stations ala IRA.

Then again, if you look at the logic of this, 2 policemen is a 50% increase in the military commitment than the 1 army officer in Afghanistan.

PRAISE THE PM!!

3. Notice they've committed to leaving this month, but nothing re arrival.
So, let's see, bus across Australia, slow boat to South Africa, bus and train up to Nigeria, camel train across the Sahara to the Mediteranean, fishing boat over to the middle east...should get to Kuwait around Christmas. The troops should have packed up and left by then.
