US National Security Advisor Meets With Russian Officials
Russian President Vladimir Putin has met with White House National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice in Moscow to discuss plans for the transfer of power in Iraq next month.

The Kremlin press service says President Putin discussed Iraq, the Middle East and bilateral relations at his meeting with Ms. Rice, who gave the Russian leader a letter from President Bush.

No other details were made available about the Kremlin meeting, which was followed by talks between Ms. Rice and Russia's defense and security ministers.

. . .

After her visit to Moscow, Ms. Rice heads for Germany, another country that strongly opposed the war in Iraq. While in Germany, she is expected to meet Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.

1. Bush's letter's introductory paragraph:
Dear Puty:
I remember when I looked into your eyes and saw a kindred soul, full of kindness and friendship. Now, I need help. I need to get my chestnuts out of the fire.

RUSSIA, USA TO CONDUCT JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE IN MAY

MOSCOW, May 14 (RIA Novosti) - American and Russian forces will take part in the Torgau 2004 military exercises, the American embassy in Moscow said in a press release on Friday.

The units of the US Land Forces in Europe and Russia's Combined Arms Academy will conduct joint exercises in Moscow and outside the city from May 17 to May 22.

Russian and American military will for the first time in history together command the exercises, which testifies to considerable progress in the two countries' relations, according to the press release. The exercises are designed to develop contacts between the military and look into bilateral cooperation opportunities.

The unified Russian-American staff is expected to work out a plan for the protection of a third country, which is fulfilling a peacekeeping mission under the UN aegis. The forces will focus both on the tactical and operational aspects of military action, according to the document.

The main objective of the exercises is to work out arrangements of planning joint operations, said the embassy.

8. There is a big article in Newsday about Asia
and how it is building a Power Bloc which does not include the US. Then again there are quite a few articles about Russia, Germany and France (and Spain I think) who have been having get togethers.

While we are bogged down in this mess, the rest of the world is positioning itself.

23. Poster at Kos says Russians

Over at Kos, one poster got an email with this observation:

The terrorists in Berg's beheading video are communicating
to each other in Russian ! One of them tells to the executioner
who was cutting Berg's head: "Davay pozhivee !" meaning
"Do it quicker !", or "Hurry up !" in pure unaccented Russian.
Initially, I thought I was the only one who noticed it, but other
Russian speakers confirmed it as well independently from me.
So, who actually killed Berg ? BTW, "Allah o Akbar" they
pronounce not with Arabic, but with a Russian-like accent.
Also, their demeanor was not Arabic at all, but resembles that
of people from the North Caucasus. Those were not Arabs ! "

Chechnyans? KGB?

9. I think that's what they want us to think . . .
. . . I've about decided that that's what's wrong with the video. It looks like someone went out of their way to make us think it was Chechens that killed Nick Berg. For what reason? I'm not sure.

Here's a really interesting expose on America's attempts to make the Chechen connection. It's called SHATTERING THE AL QAEDA-CHECHEN MYTH: http://www.peaceinchechnya.org/news/200310-11%20-%20BGW%20Article.htm

And of course there's this that I posted earlier which raises its own set of questions: http://en.rian.ru/rian/index.cfm?prd_id=160&msg_id=4314041&startrow=31&date=2004-05-14&do_alert=0
