12. That was an amazing finish ... like he was running the Belmont Stakes?
The Derby is a mile and 1/4th.
The Preakness is a mile and 3/16ths.
The Stakes is a mile and 1/2!. (That's more than 25% longer)

It looked to me like Smarty Jones was still pouring on the coal, ready for another 5/16ths of a mile.

11. I don't know racing
but I was wondering if they were going to disqualify the horse because it would get in the chute. A little pain therapy with a twisted ear seemed to work.

I am beside myself. Happy to see some other fans here. Smarty should be the DU pick, he's the working class low rent horse who's not supposed to win these races:)))). GO Smarty!

17. What a horse! Did you see him in the final stretch?
I bet Carlos Meyers, the famous DC bartender and pony-player plus-perfect, is grooving on this tonight. Smarty Jones .. great name. Actually it was the name of a drug dealer from Georgia who went on the lamb in Thailand for about ten years. That's another story.

Smarty Jones Sets Record in Preakness Win

By RICHARD ROSENBLATT

BALTIMORE (AP) - Smarty Jones blazed into the lead turning for home and won the Preakness by a record 11 1/2 lengths on Saturday, setting the stage for a dramatic Triple Crown try at the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

The undefeated colt has a chance to become just the 12th Triple Crown champion and the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed in 1978.

The crowd at Pimlico roared as jockey Stewart Elliott asked Smarty for his patented run for home. The Pennsylvania-bred responded by moving to the inside of pacesetter Lion Heart and pulling away. The margin of victory topped the record of 10 lengths by Survivor in 1873, in the first Preakness.

20. I REALLY hope Smarty wins the Belmont
It's been 26 years since the last time a horse has won the Triple Crown. I've spent the last few years seeing a lot of horses winning the first two races, then lose the Belmont. I don't want Smarty to end up like Funny Cide did.
