Soldiers Killed; Fighting Subsides (5 US soldiers died)

Baghdad, Iraq-AP -- Five more American soldiers have died in Iraq. The US command in Baghdad says three of them were wounded in rebel attacks. One was killed when his vehicle overturned during a patrol. The other was found unconscious and died of what the military says were natural causes. The deaths push the number of Americans who've died in Iraq since the war began to at least 780. Most of those have been the result of hostile action.

Iraqi insurgents fired a mortar round at a local army recruiting center in the northern city of Mosul on Saturday. The shell landed in a crowd of people who were waiting to sign up. Hospital officials there say four people are dead and 19 more wounded. Things appear calmer in southern Iraq. American troops continue fighting militiamen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in Karbala, although the clashes are less intense than they have been. And Najaf is reported to be relatively quiet following fierce fighting Friday around one of the Shiites' holiest shrines.

Shooting has subsided in Nasiriyah after an all-night battle around coalition headquarters between Shiite militiamen and Italian forces. Near the city of Amarah, a British patrol was ambushed and a firefight erupted. British troops say they killed as many as 16 Iraqi insurgents.

The longer they stay in Iraq the more will die.

Sending more troops to Iraq will not make a better occupation.
