China orders TV stars to stop 'queer' western behaviour

Chinese television presenters have been told to stop dyeing their hair, exposing too much flesh and using English words in a government campaign to shelter young Chinese minds from the pernicious influences of sex, violence and foreign ideas.
The policy, which also includes a ban on imports of overseas crime shows and "queer dressing", has caused widespread controversy.

Many believe it goes against a popular social trend towards greater individual freedoms and wider exposure to international fashion and culture.

Mainland Chinese television remains remarkably staid compared with the wild, wacky and often sexually explicit fare served up in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Although there are dozens of terrestrial channels, they are all run by the state or provincial government.

If I'm picking up one thing from recent stories on places like China and Iran, it's that these days people will put up with a fair amount of political repression (as long as their government isn't massively corrupt), but they will resist, evade, and defy any attempt to deny them the right to be cooler than the next guy.

As long as places like Japan and Hong Kong are setting the coolness standards for the Far East, mainland China has no hope of resisting assimilation.

 Leave the snazzy fashions at home. Drop the English words. And, avoid "Western ideology."

China's media regulators are tightening their control over television, ordering celebrities to steer away from faddish clothing and telling broadcasters to shun imported programming that doesn't fit China's "social system and national conditions."

Such edicts have been in place for a while. However, they weren't being obeyed by China's state-owned but increasingly freewheeling broadcasters, the Shanghai Daily and other newspapers reported Friday.

One would think that the Chinese government's efforts to control population growth (mandatory abortion) that they would be allies with gay movements. Honestly, who is able to have less children than gay people? I guess the Party leadership is still clinging to "traditional" values of homophobia, despite the political compatability of one of the governments goals with an increase in the gay population.

Of these cases, 19,940 cases were reported in Detroit, where 2,073 people committed crimes in every 100,000 people. In Baltimore, 2,055 people committed crimes in every 100,000 people. With regard to personal offenses, cases of murders and rapes rose by 0.8 percent, and 4.0 percent, respectively, over 2002 (see The Sun, USA on June 18, 2003)."
