Tens of Thousands Rally in Israel for Gaza Pullout
Tens of Thousands Rally in Israel for Gaza Pullout

Sat May 15, 2004 01:38 PM ET

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Israelis rallied on Saturday to pressure Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to push ahead with his stalled Gaza pullout plan after Palestinian militants dealt Israel's army its deadliest blow in two years.

Crowds poured into Tel Aviv's main square for the start of what leftist organizers hoped would grow into one of the biggest demonstrations in years by Israel's "peace camp," largely dormant since the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising in 2000.

The killing of 13 soldiers by militants in the Gaza Strip this week has deepened already strong public support in Israel for a unilateral Gaza withdrawal rejected by Sharon's right-wing Likud party, opinion polls show.

Saturday's rally was intended to evoke memories of the public clamor that led to Israel's 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon after a 22-year occupation that cost the lives of hundreds of troops in fighting against Hizbollah guerrillas.

9. "Up to 150,000," according to Aljazeera...

Israelis rally in favour of Gaza pullout

If 150,000 is accurate, it's approximately equivalent to a rally of 7 million in the US.

a controversial story on yahoo is usually rated 3.0 to 3.4.

Take a look at the associated pic.

I told you most of Jewish people are good people. It's the leadership that are maggots the same as Bush and the Repukes and most Americans are very good people if the American Media Whores published the truth. RICO!

4. The Sign with Hebrew Letters...
it's Shalom, or Peace.

I believe that most Israelis (and most Palestinians) want peace, especially the more secular ones. But there are some religious extremists. On the Jewish side, they believe they are entitled to all of that land because the bilbe says so. The Muslims see this as a Jihad. Both groups of extremists see nothing wrong with slaughtering innocents to further their cause.

20. It is a thread about Israeli's marching, not diaspora
and it's not just 'occupied territories' which are lands taken from rightful Palestinian owners. The UK and the UN were wrong to ever mandate a 2 state system over the objection of every single neighbor state and the people who lived there.

22. Then say Israelis, not Jews.
And while I condemn the illegal occupation of Palestine that is perpetuated by Israelis today, the people who live in the state of Israel today, who were born long after the partition and had nothing to do with that can't be assessed as good or not good people, especially as an ethnic group based on that. Are "Americans" bad people en masse because 4 centuries ago in another historical travesy they took the land from the Indians?

6. OMG!!! That is absolutely wonderful.
Too bad that cannot arrange to march alongside the Palestinians who also seek peace.

However, that pro-peace anti-Likud rally is just awesome and brings hope to the situation,...at least in my heart and mind.

13. Haaretz story: Over 150,000 attend rally calling for Gaza withdrawal
More than 150,000 people attended a left wing demonstration at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv on Saturday evening under the banner 'get out of Gaza and start talking."

Event organizers assessed that some 250,000 were present, Army Radio reported.

The rally opened at 8 P.M. with a minute of silence to commemorate the 13 Israel Defense Forces soldiers killed in the Gaza Strip over the past week.

23. so we may at last see the demise of Sharon.
Edited on Sun May-16-04 11:36 AM by phoebe
This cannot be good news for him and his supporters though they will play it down, or try to ignore it completely. I suspect some rather ugly tactics are going to be used in order to quash the opposition, not unlike what has been going on here, before we see new leadership in Israel.
