Saddam trial 'would embarass West' - lawyers
Paris - The trial of Saddam Hussein will prove an embarrassment for the West, which curried favour with Iraq's dictator to cut lucrative deals before he fell from power, lawyers planning to defend him said Friday.

No date has been set for the trial and no charges have been filed. In fact, very few people even know where the defendant is.

Still, nearly two dozen lawyers are plotting out a strategy to defend the deposed dictator in case he is brought to trial. They contend any such process would be illegal and would embarrass the West.

'When we open the files, you'll see who will be guilty: Iraq or the US'

"When we open the files, you'll see who will be guilty: Iraq or the US," said Jordanian attorney Mohammad Rashdan.

Rashdan, in Paris to confer with French colleague Emmanuel Ludot, said he was hired by Saddam's wife, Sajida Khairallah Telfah. Rashdan said he handled two government cases for Saddam when he was in power and knew him personally. He now heads a committee of 20 lawyers working on Saddam's behalf.

Ludot denounced what he said was the hypocrisy of any trial.

nephew's going to prosecute. . . major damage control will be demonstrated.

But I still harbor serious doubts that he's ever going to go to trial. Rumors will circulate that Sadaam is suffering from a virulent inoperable form of cancer, then will suddenly and mysteriously croak.

Poof. Case closed.

3. I will be very surprised if he lives to engage in a full trial,...
,...precisely due to what these attorneys are talking about (and this article must be extraordinarily threatening to the freon neocons).

4. What trial?
Why do you think the idea of turning Saddam over to the "new" Iraqi government after June 30 was floated a couple of weeks ago?

Viceroy Bremer or Viceroy Negroponte will turn Saddam over ... then Saddam will be assasinated ... then the problem will be solved, right?

Murder engineered by the Bush regime is always their answer.

7. Translates to: 'We invaded Iraq but didn't find all the receipts he saved.
Damn rat bastard must've sent them off to Russia in that truck convoy before we liberated Baghdad.'

They gotta account for every scrap of paper with an American neocon signature on it before anything goes to trial on this one. Saddam may have thought he had WMD but the US knew he didn't. That Cheney and Rumsfeld knew he had a paper trail would be a safe bet

8. Oh, my stars look at this:
The last few paragraphs:

"Both lawyers contend that any trial will be illegal because the United States invaded Iraq without UN backing, captured Saddam illegally and is detaining him illegally. Both lawyers refer to the former dictator as "President Saddam", contending that he is still the legal leader of Iraq.

Lawyers are working to get any trial held outside Iraq. Ludot has predicted the trial will lead to a swift guilty verdict and Saddam's execution.

If by the end of the year no trial is in sight, Ludot said that lawyers will seek to have Saddam freed.

"We're in illegality from the beginning to the end," he said. - Sapa-AP

Well at least we have a good idea where it all began!

9. Oh, you mean embarrassing facts like Iraq oil was being shipped to U.S.
during the oil embargo period?

_______________________

...A source in the intelligence community tells me that the U.N. oil embargo of Saddam Hussein was worthless because Iraqi oil was being shipped all these years to a Caribbean island called St. Eustatius, unloaded into onshore tanks and then reloaded into U.S.-bound tanker ships.

The same switcheroo is being done with Iranian oil, I'm told.

Oh, and the source says Washington would rather nobody know about this.

11. Hmmm, will the investigation into the "oil for food" program reveal this
little trick that was being pulled? Who has oil refineries in St. Eustatius?

10. The hatchet man John Negroponte will make sure that Saddam Hussein
never goes to trail. You can take that to the bank!

Expect Saddam Hussein to die much like Jack Ruby. It has been said that Saddam has cancer. Isn't it the duty of the U.S. to make sure that Saddam has a first class Oncologist? Right!! Hell, everyone knows 'ya treat cancer mostly with chemotherapy. Go figure.

Anyway Mr. Negroponte will explain it to us when Saddam expires. cough cough
