John Kerry Calls Iraq Prison Photos 'Sickening'
<WASHINGTON - Democrat John Kerry, who made a late-night trip to the Capitol to see the photos of abused Iraqi prisoners, on Friday described the images as "appalling, depraved and sad" but argued that only a small fraction of the U.S. military was responsible.

Kerry faulted Bush administration's policies for contributing to the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers, including poor training for prison guards, extended tours for service members and the failure to grant rights to detainees consistent with the Geneva Conventions.

Kerry met with reporters and answered questions, including queries about the photos.

"They were sickening, appalling, depraved and sad," said Kerry, who indicated that the material should be released in one package though "there are obvious considerations in that process that needs to be thought through."

The senator said he was concerned that the photos would come out piecemeal and argued that it would be in the Pentagon's interest to release them in a single batch. He also expressed concern that failing to grant rights to detainees put U.S. soldiers at greater risk. >

2. So Kerry Supports the Release of the photos....
...in "one package" instead of piecemeal (which we know is going to happen)....

Actually, I think a weekly photo or two between now and the elections might be a great thing to keep America sick until it voted Bush out...

I guess this was a good statement by Kerry? Doesn't advocate censorship and forces the Pentagon and WH to decide what they want to do and Kerry can always say - Hey, I supported and suggested you release it all at once...

3. He still refuses to call the war a mistake
I hope he isn't serious about this, because the world is not going to be suddenly keen on joining this fiasco, just because Bush is out. Not in any great numbers, not unless Iraqis go for a U.N. solution, which includes U.S. withdrawal. I wouldn't count on any of that.

"Kerry declined to call the war a mistake, but he argued that President Bush has prosecuted it poorly. The senator must walk a political fine line in criticizing the war - in 2002 he voted for the congressional resolution authorizing Bush to use military force to oust Saddam Hussein.

"It is important that Iraq not be a failed state," said Kerry, who argued that he could do a better job than Bush in enlisting the help of other countries in the war effort. "I'm convinced, after talking to a lot of people, there are countries that could be brought to a place of understanding.""

4. Why is that?
It was a mistake (going in without UN support). He should just come out and say it.

,...leading to a perpetual quagmire and black-hole investment of American blood and treasure.

Moreover, the way the war is being prosecuted is not only losing the heart and minds of people everywhere it is also creating more enemies.

<on edit - he's right about the photos: it's just plain dumb to censor what is going to trickle out anyway.

5. Oh, come ON, Kerry.
...but argued that only a small fraction of the U.S. military was responsible.

It's institutional. This has been documented in both military and independent investigations.

Get with the program, John.

Good on him for supporting the release of all the evidence, though.

18. I agree
Glad to see he's for releasing the photos, but disappointed by him saying it was only a fraction of the military and that he wouldn't call the war a mistake.

Sounds like more Bush lite.

US clarifies Iraq intentions

Sat 15 May, 04:09

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. forces are expected to remain in Iraq
after a June 30 transfer of sovereignty, but would leave in the
unlikely event they were asked to go by an interim government,
the White House says.

Bed nobs & Broomsticks ala Harry Potter-

I wonder what the charge is for this media raincheck?

10. thanks for the example:)

<<"My reaction was they are sickening, they are appalling," the presidential candidate said. "I don't believe they represent our country, they don't represent our values, I know they don't represent the vast majority, the 99.9 percent of our courageous soldiers who are serving our nation with distinction.">>

even better adding the American people to that statement..everyone is rightly concerned about the violence and terror being inflicted on the Iraqi people by the Bush Administration. It's inhumane and someone has to stop it..thinking of Gitmo...wondering what horrors lay ahead?

<<"Kerry faulted Bush administration's policies for contributing to the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers, including poor training for prison guards, extended tours for service members and the failure to grant rights to detainees consistent with the Geneva Conventions.>>

But the point is..The Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld cabal think the training is TOP NOTCH! (they knew about it..they sanctioned it!)

we're over here..HORRIFIED!

<<"Those factors created a "kind of indifference that allows things to get out of control.">>

The indifference is 3 horseman who are depraved, coldblooded and inhumane.

13. Dammit, I'm sick of EVERYONE ELSE telling me how
"shocking/appaling/disgusting/sick/depraved/whatever" the new pictures are.

If this had happened on Bill Clinton's watch, you KNOW they would have been published SIX MONTHS AGO on the highest-quality magazine paper, bound in leather and printed at taxpayer expense. Bill Schneider and William Bennett would be inescapable on TV telling us all about the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL these pictures represent.

Kerry and every other Democrat need to be making the Regime's collective life a living, breathing HELL by demanding the IMMEDIATE and full release of these pictures. Every third demand needs to be prefaced by "What is the administration trying to cover up?"

I paid for these pictures with my tax dollars. I want to see them ALL and I want it NOW!

:grr:

"Kerry and every other Democrat need to be making the Regime's collective life a living, breathing HELL by demanding" to know: Why All the need for such Secrecy? We're living with your mess. The American people want to know why since your installation to the Oval office your behavior smacks of Facism! (or some such!)
