RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A man was sentenced to 350 years in state prison for the molestation and kidnapping of his roommate's 5-year-old daughter.

Charles William Mix, 49, kidnapped the girl in June 2003 and was later found eating hamburgers with her on the lawn of a Mormon church in Richfield, Utah, after a woman called in a tip.

I think the original poster has a point though, 350 years is an absurd sentence. Why not just sentence him to "life."

on this issue, i am hard core.rape or molestation is as bad as homicide in my mind. no, 2nd chance and i would prefer execution. there is no reason to keep these beasts alive.

6. Life and a day.

In Alabama (at one time), you could be sentenced to life in prison 'and one day'. You could not be released until you served that day. And you could not serve that day when still alive. It was life with no possibility of parole.

5. You are missing the point....

The 350 years is not excessive..it ensures that for purposes of probation or parole, this offender will not be out in 5 years, but likely never see the free world again for maybe 90 to 100 years. In otherwords, he got life.

Every convicted sex offender needs at least 350 years...some, more.

generally means about 7 years of actual confinement. A 350 year sentence is the equivalent to "life without parole" in states that don't have a life without parole sentence.

9. I don't know where most posters live- but

it doesn't sound like the 21st Century- or even in the last decade. Most states have done away with anything that might be considered lenient parole years ago. In the federal system, there's been NO PAROLE AT ALL since 1986 (on new sentences- there's a double jeopardy problem for people who committed crimes before that).

Irrespective of what anyone might think this particular convict deserves (it's kind of hard to say, given the limited facts) I would hope that people might reexamine their faulty beliefs about the criminal justice system. By holding onto them, you become an eager tool of the far right in their push toward mandatory minimum sentences and retention of ill conceived three strikes laws for all sorts of offenses. You become, in essence, a tool for injustice. And I don't think anyone here wants that.

BTW: in California, no one gets out of prison on a life sentence in "7" years or even in 17. Not without a pardon or proof of innocence. The exact length depends on the statute and the judge- but a common sentence for a felony other than 1st degree murder would be in the order of 25 years to life (as is provided by the three strikes law, for example).
