Rice Likens Terrorists to Klansmen

By JOHN GEROME, Associated Press Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) said Thursday that terrorists today are driven by the same hatred that inspired Klansmen to bomb a church in 1963 in her hometown of Birmingham, Ala. President Bush (news - web sites)'s national security adviser spoke to about 10,000 people — including a small group of protesters — at Vanderbilt University's Senior Class Day.

<snip>

Today, many express doubts about prospects for freedom in the Middle East, much as they once did about Russia, Africa and the American South, Rice said.

She urged students to avoid the mistake of thinking some people do not "share your desire to live freely."

<snip>

Before Rice's speech, about 40 protesters gathered in the drizzle, some holding signs such as "Vandy Does Not Support Liars."

1. No comparison. These people are fighting an occupation.
The soldiers in the pictures looked more like the Klansmen I remember. Ever see the picture of the men, women, anc children standing at the foot of a trees where three blacks were hanging?

3. These people fighting the occupation arn't better people
Many of them arn't even Iraqis, because are the Al Queda/Ansar al Islam types that have taken advantage of the power vaccum caused by this war.

6. Barefoot, wired, atop a box with arms out like Christ on the cross?
When I saw the words "Rice" and "klansmen" the Abu Ghraib POW's picture popped into my head.

4. My history teacher called the Klan a terrorist organization.
It was before 9/11, so it's not like she was exploiting the term for political advantage. I suppose in some ways Rice is correct, many of the terrorist groups we are fighting are fanatical religous zealots who don't think people should be free to live differently from what their holy texts say. Kinda like Ashcroft, really.

7. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day
I reluctantly, but only partially, agree with her comparing terrorists to the KKK.....but she doesn't bother to mention that the KKK--and others like them--is a terrorist organization, and should be registered as such.

BTA, Bush could be labeled a terrorist sympathizer even in the media if the government went about tagging the KKK with the Scarlet T.

I wonder how many there share her desire to "live" freely considering her "color and attitude."
