Nigeria wooing oil-rich neighbour Sao Tome?
Nigeria is negotiating a military pact with its tiny, oil-rich neighbour Sao Tome and Principe, an island nation reeling from a recent coup attempt, Nigeria's president said in a letter to lawmakers released on Wednesday.

Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo said it was in his country's national interest to "stabilise and consolidate the security" of Sao Tome and Principe President Fradique de Menezes.

The fundamental social, economic and political problems that brought about the coup d'etat still prevail in Sao Tome and Principe.

He called for the agreement "to put the mutual security and core national interest of Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe on even keel", Obasanjo said in the letter, which was given to journalists.

No details of the accord under negotiation were released.
