Congressmen Describe Pornographic and Violent Images
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGA4GLS16UD.html

Members of Congress saw classified images of Iraqi prisoner abuse Wednesday. Some of their descriptions of the photos and videos they saw:

- A prisoner apparently sodomizing himself with a foreign object. "There were certain wounds," said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz. "I didn't see anyone inflicting wounds but it was certainly implied that they were inflicted."

- More than seven soldiers standing in a hallway with a clump of people tied together on the floor. "You can't tell me all of this is going on with seven or eight Army privates," said Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla.

- Pornographic images involving prisoners. "It was hard to tell what orifice you were looking at in the pictures I saw," said Rep. Dave Weldon, R-Fla.

2. Frickin horrible
I just hope for the sake of our troops they don't get shown.Politics is one thing but I ain't playing when it comes to the safety of our young men and women overseas. This coming from a person who wants almost more than anything else right now in my life to see Bush out of the Oval Office-but not at the cost to come if more of these horrible images get in the wrong hands.

3. Let's not loose sight of our feet
while we are searching for the finish line. I agree that we need to protect our troops, but the only way to do that is to BRING THEM HOME. If we begin to ignore the problem, then we have become another Nazi Germany. If we say that these pictures shouldn't be shown to the public because they will endanger our troops, then the history books will write about the evil American reich.

5. I'm told they will find there way into a lot of hands
Edited on Wed May-12-04 06:52 PM by Mountainman
I don't want to see them. The descriptions of yesterday and today are graphic enough for me.

I've seen enough of what humans can do to each other in war.

All of this is bringing me so down. I haven't done any work for 2 days. I just stay here looking for something but it ain't here. Good news I guess. Even Bush's 44% doesn't help.

6. and i'm not playing either -- show the damn pictures
this is what americans do -- this is what we are -- from the founding of the country til this very moment.
no, it's not all americans -- but the arrogant posturing that somehow this is out of character for us has to go.
the torture pictures remind me of everybody dressed in their sunday best for a lynching.

7. AMERICA IS KNOWN FOR THE TRUTH
Edited on Wed May-12-04 06:52 PM by saigon68
The generals and their handlers don't want the people to know the truth about the POW abuse, because it might cost their handlers the election.

The picture above if it were my kid, or my neighbors kid, would be enough to convince me to do just about anything.

Are you saying a naked man getting his Pee Pee slapped is worse ???

And I can't see it ( the pee pee slapping) because it would endanger the troops ??

Just asking ??

8. No, comes a time
in everybody's life when the facts must be known. There are no excuses for this invasion, occupation, and degradation's of those hapless people held under our control.

This is what happens when civilians are inserted into the chain of command. It also happens when civilian soldier of fortune Rambo types are turned loose on innocent civilians no matter where they may be. It might happen here in the good old USofA if it continues.

9. Out of curiosity why don't you want them shown?
The world needs to see what has been done and it shouldn't be hid.

* and his cohorts need to be brought up on war crimes including some of "our" men that have abused human beings.

that these are worse. That those we already saw. Stop thinking these are fake and realize that Bush is stupid and the rest are just nuts.

13. safety of our young men and women overseas
I hear this a lot. What is it that people are looking for to improve the saftey of our young men and women? And what actions should be taken then? This concern is raised whenever anyone speaks out about our little genocide, however the argument stops there, like don't do or say anything, just hold your breath and pray that this will all go away and everybody will be "safe".

28. saigon, clear enogh, but I'm wondering what those
guys are offering up as a solution to the "keep them safe/ harms way" problem. I guess it would have to be "stay the couse/complete the mission" even if they have no idea anymore what the mission is.

16. There is no picture that could make the Iraqis more pissed off at us...
...than they already are. We invaded and occupied their country. Then we started pumping their oil out to pay for the damage we did. And then we brought in a shit load of high paid "contractors" (read illegal aliens/mercenaries) to take the jobs that Iraqis once did, and pay these thugs out of the proceeds of the oil we are stealing. Don't even mention the prison fiasco. The Iraqis know what is going on in the prisons already. They are the ones who have been in them. Bad news travels fast in Iraq too. Showing or not showing the pictures will only let the American people know what has been going on in their name. And give us some kind of idea of the hopelessness of situation in Iraq.

25. Amen, Don, Amen
The Iraqis already know; untold hundreds -- no, thousands -- of them know first-hand. All we Americans have to do is look at the pictures.

I'd say it's the least we can do.

Peace,

Tansy Gold

18. re: the "endangers the troops" excuse.

Message to the world: "we'd have let the truth come out, but it just looked so bad that we had to hide it for our protection."

Yeah, that'll keep the troops safe. :eyes:

26. it won't matter
The people of Iraq and elsewhere know what went on in that prison and others. Surely the people who were held there have taken their stories back to the their communities, and I would guess word of mouth and good ol' "telephone" have already expanded and built the stories into more than what the images we've seen show. The US' (already weak) credibility was utterly destroyed by the first batch of photos, and even those who were leaning towards the US are probably now more likely to believe anything they hear, true or not.

At this point, it seems keeping the remaining images private is about protecting the American public more than anyone else. (Though again, I would say that any released images should blur the images of the people involved out of consideration for the victims and whatever criminal/military investigations are going on.)

While I do think the pictures prompted the beheading video, the fact remains people will continue to fight the US' presence in Iraq, and that will include a whole lot of killing on both sides. In other words, the troops are already in danger, and the damage of this scandal has already been done. The release of more pictures at this point will be a drop in the bucket to what the people of Iraq already think of Americans. What the people in the US will think of themselves is what's really at stake here.

damn, this is not only disgusting, it's sickening to think that Americans - IN UNIFORM, could do such shit. this is making the killing fields of vietnam look like a sunday walk in the park.

"but no one died" is why it's even more sad.

19. THis is horrid
I want to cry over all this. From the shock and awe attack on Baghdad to the untold number of civilian casualties to the over-700 American military killed. It's all too much.

The only positive thing I can take from all this is that I'm putting my horror, my anger, my disgust into working for John Kerry and getting this idiot of a President out of our White House!
