BAGHDAD, May 12 (KUNA) -- UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi Wednesday stressed that US authorities had informed him that remarks by Colin Powell that the authorities to be handed over to Iraqis would be limited, included unfortunate choice of word.
The statements came during a series of meetings Brahimi held with senior Iraqi figures, intellectuals and representatives of civil-society organizations and the press, with KUNA's correspondent present.
Brahimi said the UN had criticized use of this expression and insisted
authorities at any country should always be in the hands of the people with no exception. The envoy added the new Iraqi government shall also decide the fate of 150,000 foreign military officers currently in Iraq. Brahimi expressed distress over the media campaign and press statements against him personally. He also said it is too early to be preoccupied with finding a role to play in the new government, as IGC members are doing, when no follow up committees had been formed yet to handle handing over of authorities.
http://www.kuna.net.kw/English/Story.asp?Dsno=630668Didn't Bush say on the TV that Lakhdar Brahimi was going to figure out things in Iraq? Will Bush heed his wishes? More importantly, will Cheney and Rumsfeld heed Brahimi's wishes? BTW, I had to go to Kuwait by way of Russia to find this article. Haven't heard a word about it in the US.
