FBI Saw Berg Before Beheading
FBI Saw Berg Before Beheading
Officials Dispute Family Claim That He Was in U.S. Custody
By William Branigin
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 12, 2004; 2:03 PM

An American civilian who was beheaded in Iraq had been visited three times by FBI agents while in the custody of Iraqi police, but he was never held by U.S. forces, contrary to claims by his family, U.S. officials in Baghdad said today.

The family of Nicholas Berg, 26, of West Chester, Pa., continued to insist today, however, that he had been had been held for 13 days by U.S. authorities in Iraq, a detention that family members said caused him to miss a scheduled departure from Iraq. Shortly after he was released, Berg was apparently captured by Islamic extremists.

1. So which prisons do the Iraqi police run?
and where were they holding him? I thought all the prisons in Iraq were run by US Forces?

I believer they took him into custody near Mosul. Where Americans there when he was arrested?

3. If he was never actually in US custody, why did the family file suit?
Or is that a lie, too?

This is coming apart faster than a stripper's costume.

4. Yes-US Custody
Total sovereignty in Iraq is held by the government of the United States. Whether they are the "Iraqi police" or U.S. forces doesn't make any difference. Both are answerable to the American administration.

There is something odd about what was happening to Mr. Berg in Iraq ... will we ever find out? Kudos and courage to his family for being brave in this horrible time for them.

7. Why didn't the FBI just get this guy the hell out of there?
I thought the FBI's job was to protect Americans. What is going on here?
