Deaf Pupils Accuse Nuns of Abuse at Mass. School

BOSTON (Reuters) - Roman Catholic nuns subjected students at a Boston-area school for the deaf to sexual, physical and mental abuse -- including rape -- according to a lawsuit filed on Tuesday.

More than two years after a pedophile priest scandal erupted in the Archdiocese of Boston, attorney Mitchell Garabedian filed a lawsuit on behalf of nine former students of the Boston School for the Deaf, which closed in 1994.

The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified monetary damages, charges that nuns at the school, along with a priest and other unidentified staff members, abused students between 1944 and 1977.

Garabedian said some of the abuse may have been punishment for students who tried to use sign language to communicate.

1. Sex abuse of minors and 50 years of US bi-partisan coverup
should be top of the presidential campaign agenda in 2004.

The story you have posted is yet another hideous example of disgusting paedophilia that has been rife in the US because politicians have been too damned scared to upset religious voters by stamping down hard on the perpetrators of child sex crimes.

The Catholic scandals have been very bad. But equally bad are some of the cover ups involving the Mormon church, where young girls are brainwashed into believing that polygamy does not demean them as wives and mothers, and that God's representatives on earth (ie men) have the right to make women share their husbands with other women in the name of religious marriage.

2. that's horrible!
The deaf school I went to in Missouri had Catholic nuns running the school, but they weren't like the nuns in this article. Sure, they actively discouraged sign language since my school was an oral school for the deaf, but that was as far as it went.
