Bush Approval Rating Hits Lowest Point
Edited on Tue May-11-04 07:17 PM by Iris

I don't know if I'm supposed to write a certain number of words or sentences in LBN, but about all I can come up with at this point is THANK GOD!!!!

I was about to lose all faith in humanity. I spent the day transporting a box of puppies that had been left by my dumpster to a no-kill shelter and came home to the horrible story about the civilian who had been beheaded.

On second thought, I do have more to say. Why is this man's approval rating still at 46%????????

1. The conventions will make a difference.
I think Kerry will start to climb once his VP pick is known.

Look back to 1992, at this point in the race Bush Sr was way out in front with Clinton even polling 3rd behind Perot. Bush's approval numbers were higher than GWB as well.

2. But that was before Electronic Voting!!
"For an incumbent to be at 46% job approval at this point in an election year has historically always spelled defeat for presidents since 1950".

9. The site (pollkatz.com) hasn't been updated since then
...unfortunately.

Another site, radiofreemonkey.com, picked up the ball and showed a similar graph. It was heading down since the bump Bush got at the Saddam capture. The spread was slightly fuzzy in January, but seemed to coalesce on a downward trend through March and April.

And now radiofreemonkey appears to be down. Oh well.

13. Well that confirms why I have been hearing a butt load of
patriotic songs on the country music stations owned by Clear Channel. Today they were playing songs by Lee Greenwood, Arin Tippen and a bunch of other "Lets feel patriotic" kind of songs. I also Flipped over to some classic rock stations (also owned by Clear Channel) and the usually right bent rock jocks were talking about people voting and how high percentages do not vote, Yada Yada Yada, and how people need to go vote. This may not sound strange to you guys, its just one of those you had to be there to appreciate it kinda things. It just struck as odd and not the norm for the usual dribble that emits from those speakers on my stereo. My exact thoughts were that the Shrub must be in trouble and they are propping him up again with Clear Channel psyops again. Thanks for the post, it wasn't just me after all.

14. Many encouraging signs in this poll: almost always spells defeat
"For an incumbent to be at 46% job approval at this point in an election year has historically always spelled defeat" for presidents since 1950"

• Kerry improved his standing with registered voters, a larger group than likely voters. He leads Bush 50%-44% among them.

• Kerry has a 14-point lead over Bush on who would better handle the economy, up from 8 points last week.

• Bush's margin on handling Iraq shrank from 15 points to 3.

"the five presidents re-elected since 1950 never fell behind their opponents among registered voters after January of an election year."

15. BTW - 2 or 3 years ago DUers would be dancing in the streets
with news of such a low approval rating.

I've noticed, over the last year or so, most here do not get very excited over bad news for *. I guess we won't get happy until Nov. 3, 2004.

19. How is it possible for that many people to still support shrub?
It is hard to fathom how 46% of Americans can be supportive of the man. But he certainly has a lot of support where I work. I also work among some highly educated people. Go figure.

While I am pleased that this spells certain defeat, I am quite concerned that there are simply too many Americans that support the administration. It gives me an uneasy feeling.
