California reduces teen birth rate through sex education
Edited on Sun May-09-04 05:32 PM by DBoon
Lead paragraph:

SAN FRANCISCO - California's teen birth rate has dropped by more than 40 percent over the last decade, a trend attributed to a state-sponsored program that provides information on sexual abstinence and birth control.
...

But note the following:

California is the only state that refuses to accept federal sex-education money, which requires public schools to teach only sexual abstinence and avoid providing information on contraception.

Advocates of California's sex education program are worried that the cash-strapped state will be pressured to accept $7 million in federal sex-education grants and shift its instruction to one that promotes only sexual abstinence.

On Edit;

Link (oops...)

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20040509-1224-ca-teenbirthrate.html

I originally got this through www.kfwb.com, but the site generates impossibly long URLs. It's on AP, so should be in a lot of places by now

2. That's absurd! PAH! I spit on your education! Only abstinence works.
Education! Next you'll be telling me that education would work better than banning drugs or guns. That maybe giving people the power to make informed decisions for themselves is always a better option than giving them no choice at all.

I spit on you and your education!

6. Now that all the states are broke...
it's comforting to know that the RW a**holes who run the country at the moment can spread more ignorance and turn the tide on the dreadful spread of knowledge by buying control of our educational system to an even greater extent.:scared:

8. Only abstinence?
Out here in Illinois, we extensively covered contraceptives in Biology and Health classes freshman and sophmore years (especially in Bio). I think the Federal Government program is "abstinence is the only safe sex" but they still educate about some contraceptives.

The program is still utter garbage, in my opinion, much like the D.A.R.E program which still teaches the lie that pot is a "gateway drug" (ugh I hate that term), while providing NO info on "harder" and 2000x more dangerous drugs like crack.

12. Your program is most likely NOT federally funded
The federal sex ed programs are small and do emphasize abstinence. The funding for your classes is probably through the district's own money, or a state program.
