The girl from a redneck trailer park who embarassed the world's superpower

Here's the highlight of the article:

But some of the locals in Fort Ashby think England is a hero. Her photograph is displayed along with those of other soldiers from the area who took part in the US-led invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq. A few of them died in action there.

At a dingy Fort Ashby saloon, the consensus was that England, the daughter of a railway worker, did nothing wrong. As one regular, Colleen Kesner, told reporters, "A lot of people here think they ought to just blow up the whole of Iraq. To the country boys here, if you're a different nationality, a different race, you're sub-human. That's the way girls like Lynndie are raised.

"Tormenting Iraqis, in her mind, would be no different from shooting a turkey. Every season here you're hunting something. Over there, they're hunting Iraqis."

3. This might sound like an excuse...

... "At a dingy Fort Ashby saloon, the consensus was that England, the daughter of a railway worker, did nothing wrong. But, it's not. When know-nothings such as England and her supporters, such as Kesner, define the country's morals and ethics, we can just give up any hope of a future.

Stupid people should only be given the due they deserve, which is next to nothing.

"Country boys...." When we begin to praise this sort of ignorance, it's time to put these hamhocks on a rocket to another planet.

Damn, I'm embarrassed by such people.

5. Could we be a little cautious with the racist term "redneck," old chap?
People of northern European ancestry, who work outdoors in the sunny climate of the Gulf south, often develop chronic sunburn, especially on the neck and face. (I remember what my dad looked like when he was a farmer -- redwood colored below the line his hat made on his forehead.) Thus the term is quite specifically race-and-social-class biased, and the reference to "trailer park" reinforces it.

6. Good points...
As Progressives, we have historically been the champions of the poor and disadvantaged. Those who live in trailer parks are people too - often, they are the invisible people doing menial jobs that never get noticed.

It pains me to see anything that smacks of looking down on them. Such an attitude come, I think, too close to that of the overfed fellow in the SUV who screams "Get a job!" at the homeless.

8. Having lived in such surroundings, but not in WVA.
I can remember most of these people now being castigated for their beliefs or lack of, as very patriotic Americans who consistently voted Democratic. WWII, Korea, VN vets who mostly enlisted.

13. Thank you.
I live in a mobile home park, but I am far from an invisible person doing a menial job. In fact, you will see my name in 10 magazines across the country. I am getting sick of posters degrading those who live in mobile homes. It's sort of like the association that Bush kept making between 9/11 and Saddam.

I certainly wasn't criticizing you. But the article seems to look down on the trailer park folks.

11. I much prefer the less offensive term "fucking dumbass"
It is undeniably applicable and makes no assumptions as to social status.

Unless sensitive Roger has a problem with that.

12. Please do not associate rednecks with trailer parks.
I am becoming very annoyed with those posters who assume that anyone who lives in a mobile home is an ignorant redneck. I live in a mobile home and I am far from an ignorant redneck. Please choose your words a little more carefully.

16. Agreed...but that was the title of the article
Per LBN rules, you have to use the title.

Not the poster's choice.

15. I would just want to die if I were this woman's mother!
Plain and simple. Pictures round the world, and all she can say to me is, "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, I didn't do it, Mom."

"There is a conspiracy", you have just got to be kidding me! I am so sick of all this. I feel for all of us. One huge collective "This can't be happening"! for us all.
