Spokesman: Bulger may resign as UMass president
University of Massachusetts President William M. Bulger may resign Wednesday after months of increasing pressure over his role in the federal investigation of his fugitive mobster brother, his spokesman told The Associated Press.
"He realized that he had to do a lot of thinking about whether remaining as president, does he subject the university to further attack," said Robert Connolly, Bulger's spokesman.

Connolly said Wednesday morning that the possibility of Bulger's resignation is "something that will unfold over the course of today," during a trustees meeting. Bulger and UMass trustees Chairwoman Grace K. Fey have been discussing a possible resignation over the past two weeks, he said.

3. He is getting too involved with his brother Whitey
He is on the FBI's 10 most wanted list. Looks like some people think he knows where he is.

4. This has nothing to do with his brother or his job performance
It's just the new republican governor trying to push out a prominent and influential Democrat, albeit a conservative one. I've never been a fan of Bill Bulger, but this is just dirty politics. :puke:

8. It's Romney's Agenda
Yeah, Bulger grabbed all the perks he could and put his cronys on the payroll too - standard old-school stuff. But he was hired as a "celebrity" to use his personal influence to lobby for UMass, and he pretty much did the job. This isn't about that.

I've always been amazed at the free pass Bulger was given on his relationship with his brother, but if no one in the an opposition campaign or the press has considered it an issue until now, it hardly seems to be the shocking revelation Romney is trying to make it out as. That's not the issue either.

While Jane Swift may have taken a few cheap shots at him, it was nothing like the intense, coordinated barrage of personal attacks from Romney and his camp. As noted in message #5, this is just another part of the national republicans' totalitarian drive for power. Swift wasn't part of the junta, Romney is.

5. Not so fast.....
this whole thing is coming right from the WH. Romney is nothing but a Rove puppet. He's flying in all his friend to take over high positions in mass. This is nothing but a ploy to get their little claws into the public college system. Bastards. Don't give in Bulger!

Give me a break with the Whitey thing. Does anyone really think the FBI hasn't had all his phones tapped for years. Besides the FBI has some explaining of their own to do in MA
