(Rochester-AP) -- Senator Hillary Clinton says New York state stands to lose 1,300 Americorps volunteers if Congress doesn''t approve an emergency $100 million appropriation.
The New York Democrat is one of 40 senators backing legislation to refund the program, which is threatened by an accounting mixup. She says Americorps could lose 20,000 volunteers nationwide, 1,300 of them in New York State.
Americorps volunteers get a college scholarship in return for their work. The program is in trouble because its former managers signed up scores of new volunteers after 9-11 but failed to add money to the program''s trust fund to cover them.
Clinton says those managers are gone, but without the extra $100 million in aid the program will virtually shut down.
