Salazar airs 1st TV ads in Colorado Senate race

Democrat Ken Salazar hit the Colorado airwaves Tuesday with the first TV ads in this year's race for the U.S. Senate.

The spots are unusual in both length and timing.

The two-minute ads airing throughout rural Colorado are vastly longer than the typical 30 seconds.

"There's no one else in the country who's done a two-minute ad," boasted Salazar campaign chairman Mike Stratton.

Shorter, minute-long ads are slated to air in the Denver metro area later this week.

1. you would think
that most people watching a 2 minute political advertisement would change channels after thirty seconds thinking a paid 30 minute advertisement has come on. I haven't seen it yet but I live in an area that gets all Denver news even though we are an hour outside of Denver.

2. The ad is on his web site

It's a decent warm and fuzzy ad. It don't believe it even mentions that he's a Democrat. Probably not a bad idea in Colorado. Salazar is setting himself up as the hard-working man of the people -- the ad stresses his humble origins (the family ranch didn't even have electricity until the 80s) and his "lift yourself up by the bootstraps" success story.

4. This race is really important.
From the Rocky Mountain News:
One major difference
Coors says similarity to Schaffer ends with ability to beat Salazar

By Gwen Florio, Rocky Mountain News
May 5, 2004

Brewery mogul Pete Coors and former Congressman Bob Schaffer may be rivals in the Republican Senate primary, but there's really no difference between them, Coors said Tuesday.

"We are very close to being the same on almost every issue," Coors said of himself and the strongly conservative Schaffer. This, despite the fact that some Republican leaders have tried to paint Coors as more moderate and likely more palatable to undecided voters in the general election.

However, Coors said that there is one important distinction:
"I have the best chance of beating Ken Salazar," said Coors, speaking of Colorado's attorney general, the leading Democratic contender for the Senate seat.
(snip)

The balance of the U.S. Senate could hang on the outcome of Colorado's race. Republicans have a 51-48 advantage in the Senate and there is one Democrat-leaning independent. When Colorado Republican Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell unexpectedly announced his retirement in early March, the state became a battleground almost overnight.
