WASHINGTON - Hoping to curb fallout over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, President Bush will conduct interviews with two Arab networks Wednesday to tell the Arab world that the instances of mistreatment are “shameless and unacceptable,” a White House official said. An Army report found that soldiers at two U.S. prisons in Iraq committed “grave breaches of international law” in their treatment of detainees.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Tuesday that Bush will conduct two 10-minute interviews with the U.S.-sponsored Al-Hurra television network and the Arab network Al Arabiya.

"This is an opportunity for the president to speak directly to the people in Arab nations and let them know that the images that we all have seen are shameless and unacceptable,” McClellan said.

"These images do not represent what America stands for, nor do they represent the high standards of conduct that our military is committed to upholding,” he continued. “What occurred was wrong, and it will not be tolerated by America."

Damage control
McClellan reiterated that the actions were carried out by “a few individuals” and said he still could not determine when Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld had informed Bush of the allegations.

He said it was sometime after January, as the allegations were making their way up the Pentagon chain of command.

Rumsfeld vows full accounting
At a news conference at the Pentagon, Rumsfeld called the abuse “deeply disturbing” and promised that “we will take these charges and allegations most seriously.”

Senators demanded to know why Rumsfeld and Gen. Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had not yet read the 2-month-old document, as Rumsfeld acknowledged Tuesday.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., emerged from a closed-door hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee to say Rumsfeld should answer questions in public. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he feared that allegations made public so far were “the beginning rather than the end” of the abuse claims.

2. Another election Ploy from the Chimp and his handlers
The Arab man in the street already has his own opinion.

This is Akin to Hitler going on TV in Tel Aviv and explaining that Eichmann's "excesses" at the camps were not "authorized"

IT IS PURE BULLSHIT

3. any bets that the two 10-minute interviews
Edited on Wed May-05-04 03:14 AM by radfringe
will come complete with pre-determined questions and scripted answers?

following the "interview" there will be a performance bush* inc. choir on major talking-head shows where they will harmonize a rendition of why it's not bush*'s fault, to be followed by a series of mini-operas of why it's Clinton's fault, the Democratic Party's fault, and culminating in a stunning finale of why it's Kerry's fault

6. So, The President of Our United States addresses two Arab networks...
... with interviews,(!!????!!) no less, before he addresses the American people on this war-ending issue?

Shocking. And, thanks-a-fuck-of-a-lot, Chimpy. The standards here are ours, and the apologies should come to us, first. After that, please do address the Arab nations, because they deserve your whimpering apologies too. But I always thought you put America First.

I think this can blow back in extreme proportions... and not from the left, either. Rove, you're wrong.

Has Chimpy even been properly prepped to give these "interviews?" He sure did require a lot more prep-and-down-time before the April News/Press Conference before the people he swore to govern and defend.

Prince Bandar sure has your balls on a string, eh, Chimp?

Disgusted,
Jennifer

13. What a slap to Americans
Why isn't he talking to us first? Highly insulting to us!

The news last night made it very clear he isn't touching this subject in any of his "bus tour" speeches.
