Lieberman says U.S. needs to stay in Iraq
NORWICH -- The United States needs to maintain commitments in Iraq to prevent insurgents who want to stop the "democratization" of the nation, said Sen. Joseph Lieberman Monday

"There's a lot on the line in this," Lieberman told the Norwich Bulletin editorial board Monday afternoon. "They want to stop us from helping the Iraqis to form a stable, democratizing, modernizing country in the middle of the Arab and Islamic world. And that's the great battle we have."

The Democratic senator spoke to the board for about 40 minutes on a number of different topics, from prescription drug coverage to his recent run for president. But he answered questions on the war in Iraq at length, saying the United States should address what he called "an obvious security crisis" with additional troops and an internationalized security force. But having spoken to ambassadors and representatives from NATO countries, he was uncertain of a timetable.

"They're not ready to come in," Lieberman said. "I mean, I don't know that anyone can convince them to come in right now. I saw the French ambassador awhile ago, and he said, look, if the United Nations adopts a resolution around June 30, we will send in a considerable number of gendarmes to train the Iraqis' domestic security forces. Well, that's quite helpful. It should be. But that's not troops on the ground."

so easy to tell others to die for you, when you're convictions fall far short of valor.

Hey Joe
some free clues YOU may understand:

1.- Sabra and Shatila

2.- Unilateral Withdrawal from Lebanon

This is, to a point, a similar situation

I knew you may understand it, since the MORE AMERICAN version, May Lai, and Vietnam seems to escape you

to repair the damage Bush has done to the military

But that is a while different ball of wax...

Still I wondder if Joe would mind sending one of his flesh and
blood down to the urban jungle of Baghdad... then I will truly
believe he believes in this crap

either. Joe wants to stay "as long as it takes" while John intends to stay until we can shift the load to the UN.

25. Bullsh*t -- Lieberman has been calling for greater UN
involvement for over a year. He's called for shifting responsibility for the reconstruction of Iraq to the UN. And while he wants the forces in Iraq to remain under US or NATO control, that's the same thing Kerry is saying. John Kerry is not calling for the withdrawal of US troops and is not seeking to place US troops under UN control. Perhaps you have mistaken John Kerry for Dennis Kucinich.

29. Can you handle the truth? Here's an excerpt
from a speech Lieberman gave in October of 2003:

<<In February I called for Iraq's civilian government after Saddam, this is February before the war started, to be run not by an American bureaucrat, but by an international administrator, preferably one from an Arab country, and one month ago I again called for the orderly transition, then I said within 60 days, of governance in Iraq from American hands to international hands, and then quickly to Iraqi hands. I repeat that call today. The longer we postpone this, the more hollow will sound our assertion that we are liberators and not occupiers, and the more difficult it will be for us to convince other nations to share the responsibility of peacekeeping, and rebuilding in Iraq.>>

Sorry, but your suggestion that Lieberman wants the US to be in control of Iraq is flat-out wrong. It is directly contrary to statements Lieberman has been making since BEFORE the war. So honestly, what is your problem?

36. Well, the things you say about Joe
Edited on Tue May-04-04 04:05 PM by dolstein
aren't half as bad as the things I could say about the tofu eating, flag burning, Palestinian-terrorist loving, Marx reading, Nader apologist misanthropes who comprise the Lieberman lynch mob. The fact is, the people who are trashing Lieberman are the spritual descendents of the people who back in 1968 were trashing Hubert Humphrey, one of the greatest liberals of the 20th century. Frankly, these people have done at least as much to destroy liberalism and the great New Deal coalition assembled by Franklin Roosevelt as anything the Republicans have done. They may call themselves liberals. They may even call themselves Democrats. But time and time again, their actions prove otherwise.

However, Kerry has not been nearly so strident with this position, and he has been more apt to criticize the existing set-up. This gives me hope that he is more amenable to rethinking his position.

The best one I heard was on The Daily Show when he was campaigning in New Hampshire. They showed Jomentum harassing people eating. This one girl was looking down at her plate and Jon Stewart said"Jomentum? It looks like they're joe blowing you off" it made me chuckle.

... his mama loves him, so he can't be all bad.

The bottom line is this: we are going to accomplish nothing further by staying in Iraq. We can get out now, or after it has cost more lives and dollars and good will (not that there is much of that left at this point).

I have some hope that Kerry will come around, based on his record. I have none that Joe would.
