HALIFAX, Mass. (AP) A convenience store's decision to put up 32 American flags and the town's order to take them down has ignited a star-spangled controversy.
Town officials say there are limits on the numbers of flags that can gallantly stream at businesses because local bylaws consider flags to be the same as signs and there are limits on the number of signs so the town doesn't become a garish eyesore.
But Karen Peck, who wants the town to exempt flags from those bylaws, said, ''My feeling is the American flag is far above being a sign.''
''It really gets me going. It just makes my adrenaline run when someone tells me I can't raise my American flag. It was something that I was brought up with. It's a sign of pride. It's a sign of our country,'' said Peck, who currently has nine flags flying as a protest at her business, the Country Club of Halifax.
