Finding her way as first lady, Shriver embarks on book tour

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Six months after Arnold Schwarzenegger was swept into office as governor, his wife, Maria Shriver, describes her new job in the familiar language of her old one.

''I'm not reporting for NBC anymore, I'm reporting for the state of California,'' Shriver said after touring a school-based organic garden here. ''I've always been kind of a general assignment reporter, and there are a lot of things that interest me.

''Childhood obesity interests me. Women's issues, small business things interest me. Motherhood interests me,'' she said. ''Getting women to stop saying, `I'm just a mother' is a thing for me.''

The 48-year-old first lady of California is familiar to TV audiences, yet intensely private off-screen. The wife of a wealthy man, she pursued her own career and kept her own bank account. A glamorous celebrity, she is also a soccer mom who car pools her four children to school.
