Sharon may modify pullout plan

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has told legislators he might modify his Gaza pullout plan following its rejection by his right-wing Likud party, his deputy says.

"The prime minister said, 'We have to put together a plan, perhaps not an identical one, in order to continue forward', and I presume that is what he will do," Vice Premier Ehud Olmert told reporters after Sharon addressed Likud lawmakers on Monday.

Likud legislator Yehiel Hazan said Sharon would press ahead with the proposal "with some amendments in order to maintain the benefits that he achieved in the United States".

Hazan was referring to U.S. endorsement of Sharon's plan to evacuate all Jewish settlements in Gaza and four of 120 in the West Bank and President George W. Bush's statement that Israel may be able to hold onto some occupied land in a peace treaty with the Palestinians.
