WASHINGTON, July 9 (Reuters) - The Bush administration on Wednesday launched a new campaign to bring energy conservation home to consumers, urging them to cut kilowatts by installing high- tech thermostats and
buying more efficient light bulbs.
The effort marks an about-face for the administration, which previously focused most of its efforts on opening federal lands to oil and gas
drilling, some environmental groups said.
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, flanked by officials representing
utilities and energy companies, said conservation could help stretch U.S. natural gas supplies that shrank to dramatically low levels after last
winter's frigid weather.
"If we have an unusually hot summer, there's a chance that prices
could increase dramatically because of tight natural gas supplies,"
Abraham said at a ceremony to kick off the new conservation
campaign.

Conservation doesn't enrich
Cheney's energy friends
WASHINGTON (AP) — Weeks before Dick Cheney went public with
the Bush administration's energy plan, he knew there was a far less
expensive alternative to the massive power plant construction and oil and gas exploration proposal he would put forth. snip
"America's reliance on energy, and fossil fuels in particular, has lately
taken on an urgency not felt since the late 1970s," Cheney said in a
speech in Toronto. "Without a clear, coherent energy strategy, all
Americans could one day go through what Californians are experiencing now, or worse." snip
"The aim here is efficiency, not austerity," Cheney said of calls for increased efforts to conserve energy. "Conservation may be a sign of personal virtue, but it is not a sufficient basis for a sound,
comprehensive energy policy."
