Atchison Casting, 12 Subsidiaries File Bankruptcy (1,300 More Jobs)
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 11:25 AM by hatrack
By Dan Margolies
Kansas City Star

"Atchison Casting, a manufacturer of metal castings, and 12 domestic subsidiaries, filed for bankruptcy protection Monday in St. Joseph and plan to sell off their operations.

The company, based in Atchison, Kan., has battled a long-running manufacturing recession and intense foreign competition. It listed $136.8 million in assets and $96.8 million in liabilities.

EDIT

Atchison Casting is the largest employer in Atchison, which is about 55 miles northwest of downtown Kansas City. The company employes 1,300 workers in the United States, including more than 500 in Atchison and more than 100 in St. Joseph.

'They're they major employer here and obviously pump lots of money into the local economy,' Atchison Mayor Dan Garrity said."

Guess this must be one of the towns Chao & Snow missed on their Potemkin bus tour.

The tax cuts are coming.

2. 1300 jobs there; 5000 with Pillowtex (Cannon Mills) in North Carolina...
I just don't see Dub being elected in 2004 if he still has a negative "job-creation-per-month" figure to contend with. x(

Truly the worst president since Harding--and the worst, economy-wise, since Herbert Hoover. Plus, he even likes to tell us that "prosperity is just around the corner" the way Hoover did! :eyes:

I just hope--no, I PRAY!--that all of these poor folks who are newly out of work thanks to Dub will remember who gave them this wonderful economy about 15 months from now!

B-)

4. keep your eye on these mid-size and smaller cities
These places are really getting brutalized by the loss of jobs and I fully expect some of them to erupt at some point.

5. This isn't sexy, folks, but it's your town, it's my town . . .
. . . it's the drip-drip-drip that Lou Dobbs and the rest of the coiffed buffoons never talk about on the tee-vee when, with hushed and reverent tones, they "analyze" every little zig and zag of the markets like a soccer mom dealing with a half-degree of fever.
