Wash Post: Gore to give Anti-War Speech at NYU
(Thursday, sold out, to MoveOn.org members)

http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20030805-094056-6957r.htm

"NEW YORK, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Former Vice President Al Gore has arranged to speak out on Iraq to an anti-war group in New York Thursday. "

...

"A Gore spokeswoman said, "He's not planning on getting back into the (presidential) race."

...

"Gore recently called the MoveOn organization and asked if he could address its members"

1. Is it a dupe?
It was already posted with drudge as the source, but I figured the "Gore to give Anti-War Speech" was a little more detailed and assertive in nature.

Specifically, that the speech is already categorized as anti-war, and not just about using the wrong methods to disarm Saddam.

Perhaps it's just semantics, but important ones.

2. She may SAY that...
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 11:26 AM by GainesT1958
But I'm willing to bet he's not making an appearance like that merely as a "favor" to moveon.org...it's called "testing the waters", folks!

B-)

3. Or not.
Maybe for him it's not just all about himself and what he's going to do.

4. Maybe he'll endorse
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 11:38 AM by party_line
It does say he arranged the appearance.

Interesting that he chose MoveOn as the conduit. Most of the candidates underplayed its importance for the online primary

7. Actually every candiate sent in statements and biographical material...
for the on-line primary - except - you know who.... Liberman. They all answered specific questions sent in by MoveOn members.

6. Or...
...he's preparing to endorse someone...it wouldn't be unexpected. We're dealing with interesting times, and a Gore endorsement could easily crush a few of the nominees completely and be a real boon to the endorsee...

8. I would be surprized if he endorsed anyone before the primaries
however he may be trying to give his support to an idea or movement he thinks is important. Knowing many democrats will listen to him and that the media will report it.

I only wish I could be there.

11. This is an interesting development
It was a year ago yesterday that Al Gore had an Op Ed published in the New York Times called Broken Promises and Political Deception (The algore04 web site is down right now, so can't post a link to it.)

He's already said that he won't run again and reconfirmed that when asked about recent rumors of him re-entering the race, and the fact that he specifically asked to address the MoveOn.org memeber, of which I'm one, makes me think that it is very possible that he may endorse Howard Dean. It's just female intuition on my part, but it's a strong vibe.

I do expect Al to slam Bush and chastise the Dems who supported the war, but I think that, unlike Bill Clinton, he sees how devastating Bush's incompetence and hubris are to this country and the world and sees the enormous importance of booting out Bush in 2004. I think that Al Gore really cares about where this nation is heading and unlike Bill Clinton, the political games are distracting us from the real issue -- that the USA is heading towards a titanic DISASTER on both the economic and national security fronts.

12. No WAY will he endorse Dean. He's testing the waters.
Reality check.

13. He's already reconfirmed that he won't change his mind about
bowing out of the Prez race.

True, Al may not endorse anyone on Thursday. He'll address the Iraq situation specifically and probably lay out a general course of action that a Democratic presidential nominee should take as well as what Dems in Congress should press for. Of all the Presidential candidates, Dean would be in the best position to take Gore's advice.
