SAN FRANCISCO -- A broken pipeline spilled as much as 1 million gallons of diesel fuel into a marsh that feeds into San Francisco Bay, according to the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday, but state environmental officials said the amount of fuel spilled could be much lower.
Officials said the exact amount spilled into Suisun Marsh, about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco, would not be known until the pipe is fixed and refilled. The pipeline feeds fuel from San Francisco Bay area refineries to Reno, Nev.
The petroleum pipeline, owned by Kinder-Morgan Energy Partners, ruptured Tuesday and environmental officials were told about it on Wednesday.
Mark Merchant, a spokesman for the EPA, said he was told as much as 1 million gallons of fuel may have spilled.
