Poll: Iraqis Want U.S. Out of Country
WASHINGTON - Despite concerns about their own safety, the majority of Iraqis say they want the U.S. and British troops now in Iraq to leave within the next few months, according to a nationwide poll of people in Iraq.

"There's a sense of disillusionment," Gallup's director of international polling, Richard Burkholder, said Thursday. "They had higher expectations of us. If we can sweep their army aside in a matter of weeks, why can't we stabilize their country? We're a victim of their high expectations."

Seven in 10 said their lives or the lives of their family would be in danger if they were seen to be cooperating with the Coalition Provisional Authority currently governing Iraq. Almost two-thirds, 64 percent, said actions by the coalition have turned out worse than they expected at the time of the invasion.

1. Imagine that!
Being starved and bombed for a decade hasn't won them over!

Shocking and Awing them hasn't won them over!

Divvying up the spoils of "reconstruction" for Texans hasn't won them over!

Bursting into their homes at night and humiliating their families hasn't won them over!

Closing down their newspapers hasn't won them over!

Attacking their holy cities hasn't won them over!

Killing them into democracy hasn't won them over!

Why, the only thing these damn people seem to understand is...

...being left the hell alone.

Ingrates!

2. Why is it that after we've
starved them, bombed them, shocked and awed them, burst into their homes and humiliated them, closed down their newspapers, attacked their holy cities and kill them into democracy, 7 out of 10 of them are more afraid of their own countrymen then us?

3. Perhaps you should go back and re-read the original post.

Your re-statement of one of the poll questions shows a willingness to take license.

5. Is something I've said
Edited on Thu Apr-29-04 11:47 PM by hughee99
inconsistant with the article or with the posts on this thread? I'm suprised that more of them didn't say that we were the threat to them. They want the US out, of course, and many of them can justify attacks on our soldiers, but I didn't see any evidence that they were afraid of our troops, just afraid of cooperating with them.

6. Yes, very inconsistent.

The article stated that 7 of 10 were afraid to be seen cooperating with us. It says nothing about how that compares to their fear of US troops versus fellow Iraqis at all, there simply is no comparison made. The only real mention I can find of their attitude towards the troops themselves doesn't address whether they fear them or not but merely states that Baghdad residents disapprove of US troops in a general way by an 8 to 1 margin. This is up markedly from August of last year.

You imply that the poll included a question along the lines of" Who do you fear more, US troops or your fellow Iraqis?". It did not.

7. I see what you mean
Let me clarify. I stated my point poorly. While I was a little suprised to learn that 7 of 10 fear for themselves and their families, I was suprised not to see the information that you were looking for. The average Iraqi is caught in the middle, I was wondering who they fear more, the US or each other. Do 7 or more out of 10 fear to appear to be cooperating with the Iraqi's fighting the occupying forces?

9. Now you're really stretching out of the poll questions.
Do you really suppose that a poll would accurately determine the percentage of Iraqis cooperating with those fighting the occupation?

You seem to be insistent on redefining that 7-out-of-10.

8. "We're a victim of their high expectations"
They expected more from their invaders, that was the problem. I mean when you have been invaded by the very best (like Alexander the Great, the Roman Empire, Genghis Khan, the Ottoman Empire, the British Empire), you just naturally have high expectations. Bushco must remember this during his next invasion - he has big boots to fill, even if he is a 'little boots'.

12. Shrub doesn't get the message, but does Kerry?
"Supply Our Military Commanders with the Additional Troops Requested. We have to succeed in Iraq. We simply can’t allow it to become a failed state. That would mean a victory for extremism, new dangers in the Middle East and a breeding ground for anti-American terrorism. To succeed, we are going to need more forces on a temporary basis. Our commanders on the ground have requested it. We should provide it."

If he really wants more votes, then maybe he should value more lives.
