Woman told IRS she had 20 kids on same day
Source: SF Chron

A Livermore woman has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for bilking the government out of $302,000 by filing tax returns for relatives and friends claiming deductions for 20 nonexistent children, who she said were born to her on the same day.

Norma Coronel, 40, pleaded guilty Sept. 2 to three felony charges of fraud and stealing government property. She was sentenced Monday in Los Angeles by U.S. District Judge Manuel Real, who also ordered her to reimburse the Internal Revenue Service.

Between 2003 and early 2011, prosecutors said, Coronel obtained Social Security numbers for 20 children - claiming she had given birth to all of them at a Los Angeles hospital on Dec. 11, 2002. She used their identities to claim dependent deductions on tax returns she filed for family members and friends.

1. a $30,000 a year scam
interesting story, but I predict it will get blown out of all proportion compared to its size.

7. Extremely unlikely
Seven seems to be the limit for all to survive. Someone had eight, but one died. Another woman gave birth to nine, but all died shortly after birth. Another woman was carrying 12, but the pregnancy was lost before birth. Another conceived 15, the current record, but again, the pregnancy was lost before birth.

24. You said: "seven seems to be the limit for all to survive"...
...and "Someone had eight, but one died".

Er, does the word "Octomom" ring a bell?

From Wikipedia:

The octuplets celebrated their first birthday on January 26, 2010.

I'll agree however that 20 seems out of the question.

I would bet my life that a human has never given birth to 20 babies at one time. The idea of it being a remote possibility is absurd and anyone who thinks so is about as bright as a creationist.

Maybe there should be a limit on dependent deductions.

Besides, Micgelle Bachmann said EVERYONE should pay at least a little in federal income taxes. :-)

13. She has to pay it back.
So she gets 18 months with nothing to show for it. I agree, though, that the prison sentence is surprisingly short.

22. The IRS computers supposed are programmed to choke over change.
As in, when my father in law retired, he got audited three years in a row, after never having been audited. (His salary was not that high, either.)

So, 20 more kids in one day is not a big enough change to make the computer choke?
