Paul Says No to Trump Debate
Saturday, December 3, 2011

~snip~

ANKENY, Iowa – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign released the following statement concerning the selection of Donald Trump as moderator for the December 27th Republican debate to be held in Iowa. Below please find comments from Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton:

“The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential Campaign Committee rejects the selection of Donald Trump as moderator for the Republican presidential debate to be held on December 27th in Iowa.

“We have conferred with our Iowa campaign chairman Drew Ivers and vice-chairmen David Fischer and A.J. Spiker who are all RPI State Central Committee Members, and they concur with this decision.

“The selection of a reality television personality to host a presidential debate that voters nationwide will be watching is beneath the office of the Presidency and flies in the face of that office’s history and dignity. Mr. Trump’s participation as moderator will distract from questions and answers concerning important issues such as the national economy, crushing federal government debt, the role of the federal government, foreign policy, and the like. To be sure, Mr. Trump’s participation will contribute to an unwanted circus-like atmosphere.

5. I thought Huntsman's flak told it like it was--who wants "The Donald's" money?
It will be a challenge to discern who will have their nose further up Trump's ass. Talk about a live train wreck!

Huntsman’s press secretary Tim Miller tweeted Friday: “We look forward to watching Mitt & Newt suck up to The Donald with a big bowl of popcorn.”

The end result will be that Huntsman gains gravitas by avoiding Donald. That can only help him.

He did not arrive at the convention as a first tier candidate. He was a 2nd tier guy, and the ultimate compromise candidate.

91. Of course I was using a slight bit of hyperbole when I said that they would "never"
nomination Huntsman. My point was that he is too sane for most of those crazies to put up with. I could see them even going with Santoram before Huntsman. And I hope I'm right. If they did nominate Huntsman he might have a better chance of winning since he is perceived to be more moderate. But in fact he is very conservative and would be a disaster if elected. He is pro life and has signed off on that no tax increase pledge just like the rest of them did. He is trying to appear more moderate simply as a campaign tactic so that he can be an alternative to the other crazies.

99. I stand corrected and thanks for that. He did not sign Grover Norquist's pledge, however
in a Fox News Republican candidates debate held last August the debaters were asked "would you support a deficit reduction deal in which cuts exceed taxes by 10 -1?" Huntsman along with all of the others raised his hand to indicate that he would not.

http://blackstonetoday.blogspot.com/2011/08/republican-candidates-take-no-new-taxes.html

That's what I was thinking of but I didn't get it quite right.

support a plan in which cuts exceeded taxes by ten to one also, if it were the right plan.

There is a hell of a lot of waste in government and programs that should, IMO, be terminated, not to mention wars that, IMO, should be terminated.

IOW, that is a vague and poorly phrased question. No matter which position one holds, one could have raised one's hand on that one.

However, again, I agree Huntsman is a very conservative candidate and therefore would be an undesirable POTUS.

74. According to the author of the seminal New Yorker article on the Koch brothers,
the Koch's invented the Tea Party in the 1980's. (I believe that may have been while they were still Libertarians, as opposed to the Republicans they now profess to be.)

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/08/30/100830fa_fact_mayer

If the author is correct, the Tea Party was nothing but Koch-funded astroturf from the jump, which I find very plausible.

Then again, I have no pro-Libertarian (or pro-Paul) OR pro-Republican bias, so I can be objective when it comes to choosing between them.

I don't mean to pry, but the I am fed up with the vagueness of "Gee, though I don't (or "though you may not") agree with Paul on everything, he sure is smart, swell, right on, worthy of respect (insert your favorite praise here).

So, from now on, I am going to ask all the vague Paul praisers to please, please be a lot more specific.

The man is fucking disgraceful Republican wingnut who is even more adverse to taxation and government than they are, except that he and the Republicans want even bigger where government doesn't belong at all.

And please don't tell me that states rights or liberty as a reason to oppose the Civil Rights Act is anything but code to cloak pandering to the racists in the RW in some kind of ostensibly respectable language. It was when Barry Goldwater used it, always has been and it still is.

85. Naturally, Orly Trump just couldn't let them have the last word
so immediately he spewed this ugly bit of projection in response:
---
"As I said in the past and will reiterate again, Ron Paul has a zero chance of winning either the nomination or the presidency," Trump said in a statement in response to Paul, adding, "my poll numbers were substantially higher than any of his poll numbers, at any time."

"Few people take Ron Paul seriously and many of his views and presentation make him a clown-like candidate," he said. "I am glad he and Jon Huntsman, who has inconsequential poll numbers or a chance of winning, will not be attending the debate and wasting the time of the viewers who are trying very hard to make a very important decision."

Trump referred to his book that's coming out and his claim he is worth more than $7 billion, and asked why he is "not the right person to lead this country out of economic chaos or at least to moderate a debate. I would like to see how Ron Paul would fair in the world of big business."

Ron Paul Rejects Donald Trump-Moderated Debate

~snip~
Trump did not take the rejection well.

In a statement to ABC News, Trump calls Paul “a clown-like candidate” who has “inconsequential poll numbers or a chance of winning.”

Trump goes on to plug his book and asks the question, how Ron Paul would fare in the world of big business.

Paul joins fellow candidate Jon Huntsman in rejecting the invitation to Trump’s debate.

but, until Cain dropped out, he was polling at 1%.

That would be Huntsman.

Former Democrat Roemer seems to fit your description, too, but he cannot get into the debates because entry into the debates depends on how much money one raises and Roemer will not accept any PAC money, nor anything over $100 fron any single individual donor. So, he's been largely invisible. I've seen him only on Colbert, the Daily Show and Rachael Maddow. So much for keeping campaigns clean.

Well how 'bout that? Something I can wholeheartedly agree with, coming out of the yap of ron paul. Temperatures dropping in Hell...

Amazing any of the clucks in this clown car gave even a whisp of a thought, for so much as a nanosecond, about the dignity of the office of the Presidency. For most of them, their very presence as candidates in these debates or anywhere else completely shits steaming piles on the dignity of the office of the Presidency.

However, one of them is getting the "dignity" treatment he so justly deserves, thanks to Andy Borowitz:

Ron Paul is the most sane one the list of republican candidates. Many wont support him mainly because of his position on ending ALL the wars we have all over the globe, and ending American Imperialism and closing all the numerous military bases and bringing our troops home, and his position to en ALL foreign aid, barring none and no exceptions, most Americans want us to cut foreign aid, with exceptions, this are the two main points that makes Ron Paul unelectable in America

101. His position on wars and foreign aid seems to come mostly, if not exclusively, from
his opposition to government and taxes.

Nothing about that is worthy.

And I am not sure that cutting all foreign aid, even if your reasons are ostensibly noble, is especially sane.

And then too, focusing on those two things while excepting his other policies is like expecting Mrs. Lincoln to have enjoyed "Our American Cousin" despite her husband's assassination by one of the cast.

41. They are mostly ignoring him-even if he does well in polls, etc
It's obvious that they don't want him to be running-it reminds me of Dennis Kucinich in 2008 election. Remember when they pulled some BS reason out of the hat as to why he couldn't debate?

I don't know exactly what RP stands for because they won't discuss him, mostly. I wish they would. RP gets hardly any time even when he's won Straw polls (California for example) He talks straight, but I am less against some of his beliefs than the others.

What ever happened to The League of Women Voters debates? Most of the debates are milquetoast now.

46. Hey no problem!
I don't know exactly what RP stands for because they won't discuss him, mostly.

Here's a list:
1. Would eliminate Dept. of Education, Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Health and Human Services, FEMA, and the IRS.
2. Would eliminate all income tax.
3. Does not believe in separation of church and state.
4. Believes states should be able to outlaw flag burning.
5. Supports DOMA.
6. Criticized Lawrence v Texas.
7. Rabidly pro-life, sponsored Sanctity of Life Act among other legislation aimed at banning abortion.
8. Is a climate change denier.
9. Opposes the voting rights act.
10. Opposes the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Separate drinking fountains and lunch counters are A-OK with him if that's what individual states want to do.
11. Opposes any limits on campaign contributions.

He may be sincere in beliefs, but not consistent.

Moreover, someone who holds all the wrong beliefs is not worthy of respect simply because he holds all the wrong beliefs are sincerely and consistently held. Candidly, that is a bizarre notion.

56. Yes! That's the reason why he is sponsoring it with his own money
That's also the reason why the little egotist will only spend that money to broadcast it over a narrow range of medium (no major networks are currently scheduled to carry it). So, he is paying for it, and he has also coincidentally nominated himself to moderate it.

Still, I would be curious to see which candidate he pitches softball questions to. Me thinks it will probably be Ms Bachmann, for the simple reason that she already has her head so firmly implanted between his widely parted gluteal divide that he is without power to imagine any other who would be more deserving of his endorsing slime; unless of course he were to become a martyr and decide to run for the office of president himself. I wonder if he has as yet confided his plans to his fellow intellectual, Howard Stern?

Besides, making money by buying companies, firing everyone and selling the assets is not such a genius strategy. All you need is the philosophy that "Greed is good." Gordon Gekko, "Wall Street" by Oliver Stone.

However, using the descriptor "reality" in a statement that depicts Donald Trump is a bit of a stretch. His campaign's choice of the term "circus-like" is spot-on however.

47. I find Paul's statement demeaning to Trump
I'm serious here. It brings Trump down to the same level as, say, the Kardashians. Donald Trump is a land speculator and casino operator, which also means he sells vast amounts of liquor, condones sexual congress between people who aren't married to each other, and probably offers pornography on his hotels' television systems. The only reason he's in the reality television business in the first place is he thinks every dollar in the world should belong to him, and doing reality television goes a long way toward making that happen.

I also think Trump SHOULD moderate the GOP debate. He's the perfect Republican: obnoxious, greedy to a fault and doesn't really give a shit how he gets his money, so long as it won't net him significant jail time. And his presence as moderator could show the true colors of the candidates: how many of them are so desperate for face time to spout their basically-identical views that they'll stand on a stage with a man whose business revolves around what Republican voters would consider to be mortal sins?

So...stand your ground, Donald.

80. Translation: Ron Paul can't produce his birth certificate.
What is "beneath the office of the Presidency" is the entire slate of Republican Presidential-wannabes. Trump may be unqualified to moderate a meaningful debate but, no matter, the candidates aren't competent to participate in a meaningful debate either.

Bring in the Donald and drop the pretense of dealing with "important issues." A mediocre reality show would be a big improvement over the debates that have taken place so far.

Considering the constituency these guys all really represent (the 0.1%), the author of "Art of the Deal" is an appropriate host for the Republican side show.

Libertarian scariness aside, he has been very good for this election in some ways. He will not be the nominee, but he has interjected some necessary truths into the national conversation, that never would have been mentioned by our corporate Republicans OR Democrats.

It is about fucking time someone shamelessly used the words "warmonger" and "profit" when discussing our foreign policy.

It is about fucking time we discussed the corruption and secrecy of the Federal Reserve.

And he is absolutely right re: Trump and our pathetic, embarrassing Presidential debates.

Where the hell is our DEMOCRATIC candidate saying these things?
