Fetus Found In NYC Garbage Bin, Yaribely Almonte Accused Of Self-Abortion
By COLLEEN LONG and JENNIFER PELTZ 12/ 1/11 04:50 PM ET

NEW YORK -- New York City police say a 20-year-old woman has been arrested on a charge of self-abortion after her fetus was discovered in a garbage bin.

A person familiar with the investigation says police are probing whether the woman drank an herbal concoction billed as an abortion-causing tea. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details not made public.

Police say Yaribely Almonte was arrested Wednesday and released with an order to appear in court in January. It wasn't clear if she had a lawyer.

The self-abortion charge refers to a woman who forcibly causes a miscarriage when she is more than six months pregnant. In New York, abortion is legal after six months only if it is necessary to save the woman's life.

1. are we supposed to know who Yaribely Almonte is?
or is Huffington Post putting random people's names in headlines for some reason?

(this is not directed at you, Judi Lynn, in case it sounds like that).

5. Ah, she's only the world's most notorious "self-aborter." How is it you didn't know?
That headline startled me, too. I, as well, don't get the motivation behind trumpeting her name in the headline.

Also, a person who "self-aborts" would have to be a time traveller, wouldn't he/she?

2. I remember reading somewhere...
I think it was the Nation or somewhere, that the main reason the supreme court made abortion legal was because of women self-aborting rather than the back alley doctors.

8. They're foaming at the mouth to be able to throw the women and anyone who knows them in prison,
then to work out a way to make abortion a capital crime.

3. Just in case you thought you had authoritative control over your own body...
Never forget sisters: We are not full agents in control of our own selves. The State is in charge of your own body, not you.

4. It is time to fight to stop the war on women...
I was one of those women who used a "herbal tea' to abort when abortion was illegal... anti-choice people are idiots and evil

6. OMG, women can't even self-abort after six months? It's one thing
Edited on Thu Dec-01-11 07:58 PM by valerief
for the maniacs to restrict doctors but women can't even abort a fetus from their own bodies whenever they want?

This country is super-fucked.

9. Is abortion legal by 6 months? That's the 3rd trimester and I doubt
that Roe v. Wade protects that.

And are there not health risks with self abortion?

10. The risks with self-induced abortion are ancient. Most conscious people know this.

A quick google grab concerning the subject:
~snip~
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that each year nearly 42 million women faced with unintended pregnancies have abortions, of which 20 million are unsafe, mostly in countries where abortion is illegal.<3>

<8> According to WHO and Guttmacher, approximately 68,000 women die annually as a result of complications of unsafe abortion; and between two million and seven million women each year survive unsafe abortion but sustain long-term damage or disease (incomplete abortion, infection (sepsis), haemorrhage, and injury to the internal organs, such as puncturing or tearing of the uterus). They also concluded abortion is safe in countries where it's legal, but dangerous in countries where it's outlawed and performed clandestinely. The WHO reports that in developed regions, nearly all abortions (92%) are safe, whereas in developing countries, more than half (55%) are unsafe.<8> According to WHO statistics, the risk rate for unsafe abortion is 1/270; according to other sources, unsafe abortion is responsible for one in eight maternal deaths.<9> Worldwide, 48% of all induced abortions are unsafe.

~snip~
Self-induced abortions. Weather you attempt yourself, or a friend helps you, there are no safe self-induced abortions. Every day, in the underdeveloped countries, almost 400 women die from unsafe abortions. Even in the United States there are several death and many more hospitalised each year from attempted “home” abortions.

~~~~~
Any woman driven to the soul-searing position in which she believes she must take a step like this is NOT making it whimsically. She is absolutely desperate. It appears some people have real trouble grasping this simple, easily perceived reality.
~snip~
Young women choosing to abort may face barriers that lead them to a self-induced or otherwise unsafe termination of pregnancy. In the U.S. the number of abortion providers has decreased and about one-third of women live in a county with no abortion provider. States are increasingly mandating parental involvement in a minor’s decision to have an abortion. In 2001 the inflation-adjusted cost of an abortion rose, with the national average ranging from $350–$900 for a first trimester abortion. 6,8 These issues are likely to influence the young women who will eventually seek care by an EP for complications associated with an unsafe abortion.
12. Article says abortion after 6 mos. is illegal in NY except for health of mother -
- which is why she's being prosecuted. The baby is viable at 6 months.
15. Roe v. Wade says the state's interest grows stronger with each trimester.
Edited on Fri Dec-02-11 10:48 AM by No Elephants
However, Roe was not about alleged self abortion by drinking herbal tea, either, but about an allegedly illegal abortion performed by a doctor.
As far as health risks, pregnancy and delivery have health risks, too.
In fact, one of the reasons for supposedly low life expectancy a couple of hundred years ago was so many babies and moms dying in childbirth. When you averaged out the figures with people who died of other causes, the life expectancy came out to something like age 39.
Yes, modern medicine has progressed, but, as far as I know, we do not require moms to have a doctor in attendance when they give birth. And, even in hospitals, moms and babies die.
16. "It's unclear how authorities tracked the fetus back to Almonte"
It does seem pacular to say the least. What one does with their body is their own business and there are enough reasons for her to do such a thing, some even cultural or religious even.
This is a view of what a world where abortion is outlawed looks like, Federal or state control of reproduction is fascist and intrusive into an issue they need not be involved in.
