Prominent Montreal Mafia boss found slain outside Montreal

MONTREAL — A man who police sources have described as having tried to take over the Mafia in Montreal has been killed.

The victim Salvatore (Sal the Ironworker) Montagna — nicknamed because of his successful metal working business in the U.S. — was once believed to have been operating as the head of the Bonanno family in New York until he was deported because he was not an American citizen.

Montagna was born in Italy and grew up in Montreal and he chose to live in the city after U.S. authorities had him removed.

(snip)

Montagna made headlines in 2006 when he was named as the acting boss of the Bonanno Family at the age of 35. Because of his youth he was dubbed the "bambino boss" by New York tabloids.
