Homeless To Find Warmth In Empty Car Dealership - Closing Library, Capitol Basement Left Few Options
Source: channel 3000

The homeless in Madison might have a place to stay warm during cold winter days after all.
City officials gave approval to a plan to provide daytime shelter to the homeless in an empty downtown auto dealership. The building on East Washington Avenue, part of the old Don Miller site, was purchased by the city for a redevelopment project that has yet to begin.

With the Central Library closed for renovations and the Capitol cafeteria closed to the public, there were few options left for Madison's homeless during cold winter days. But come mid-December, that will change.

"We're going to make it work," said Steve Schooler, executive director of Porchlight. "With the other locations, we were trying to figure out how to van people from the downtown to other spaces. This is within walking distance for most people from the shelters where they stay."

Porchlight is the group that will be turning the lights on inside the old car showroom. Part of the deal with the city includes a zero-rent lease, but the utilities won't come free. Schooler estimates it will cost about $1,000-$2,000 per month.

1. We need permanent housing for the homeless .... and, for one, NYC has some really screwed up laws
governing that --

You can put them in hotels and temporary housing, but nothing permanent???

Obviously we need low income housing -- and fast!!

Meanwhile -- presume we are all grateful for any assistance for the homeless --

and it would be nice to hear Obama/Dems talking about them once in a while --

in a more serious way !!

The flawed mentality people now have is denial, and rejection in the form of "get out of my backyard".

Homeless deserve upmost respect. I'm glad they are being given shelter from the elements in this auto showroom. But, what people need is top of the line housing in which they can feel good about the world.

Mahatma Ghandi said, "A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members."

Agree --

and think that's what everyone so loved about FDR speeches/writings - and same

with JFK --

and why they are remembered with affection.

Happy Thanksigiving !

4. There is no excuse for homelessness in this country
Empty homes, empty buildings, people out of work and we force people to live in the streets.
