Occupy marchers arrive in Washington

Elizabeth Flock, Washington Post

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

Almost two weeks ago, 21 Occupy Wall Street protesters decided to take the movement on the road, in a march from New York's Zuccotti Park to the White House. Their goal: to spread the movement to the 12 cities and small towns they would pass through, and to protest the congressional supercommittee's likely decision to retain Bush tax cuts "for the rich," or the "1 percent."

The protesters - accompanied by a Washington Post reporter - embarked on the 231-mile trek with a $3,000 check from Occupy Wall Street. But the marchers soon found they didn't need the money, as they received donations of food and cash, cigarettes and deodorant from residents and passers-by. Occupy movements also sprang up or grew larger in their wake in places such as New Brunswick and Trenton, N.J.

Although some of the 21 marchers dropped out because of missing toenails, shin splints or fevers, new marchers have joined. More than twice the original number of protesters arrived in Washington on Tuesday.

Today, the Occupiers intend to hold a "day of action" to shut down part of the city in protest of the failure by 12 lawmakers to reach a deal that would ease the tax burden on the "99 percent."

1. Thank you for posting this!
What an inspiring story in so many ways. From getting unexpected donations as they walked to having people take the place of those who were forced to drop out to school age children putting up peace signs to the encouragement from people greeting them. Of course what would a march like this be without the inevitable 'get a job' insult.

37. I don't think the banks sold that debt as good debt. The purchasers did not care if it was good

debt or not since they planned to making a fortune by rebundling it as mortgage backed securities and selling it to the public, both in the U.S. and abroad.

And they did. And when their shenanigans finally hit the fan, we bailed them out, too.

And everyone along the line knew something was very wrong, from the appraissers who were appraising the homes to the lawyers who were reading the paperwork for the securities. Maybe even some in the SEC.

Banks actually paid mortgage loan originators more money for risky mortgages than they did for sound loans.

However, mortgage backed securities was far from the only problem the US has had since 1980.

ETA. Didn't notice originally that a post setting forth your mixed feelings about OWS was your very first DU post.

I'll bet if they stake out that hairdresser that Gary Condit used to go to, they'd get half of Congress. For some reason, a lot of those guys think that those blonde highlights look good on them!

Foe many of us seniors, it is incumbent that we do what ever we can to support these heroes of our new republic.

I thought this failure was sposed to be an amazing brilliant coup by our POTUS. ????

I'm with all of you in solidarity with the marchers. Totally. And I support this "day of action" re the Superocommittee too.

32. Kudos to the marchers.
Thank you so much for what you are doing bringing the message to so many people. I am with you in spirit. If at 70+ I wasn't living outside the country (since I can't afford to live in the US on my anemic social security), I would be with you physically.

I marvel at the density of so many who refuse to comprehend what occupy is all about. Reading the first "most popular comment" following the article by poster BigSquash simply shines light on that. No, we don't want your money or your property. We have no greedy desire for what you have earned fair and square. It's an insult when you start quoting Lenin to us. We simply want you to quit buying our government and twisting it to your own petty desires and in the process destroying the very country that has provided you with the conditions to create your wealth.

Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 10:20 PM by wordpix
There was only light traffic today in the city and even at rush hr., it was easy to get around. An estimated million people left the city for the holiday.

I am going to make an after Thxg turkey to take down to McPherson Sq. just to say thanks.

http://occupywallst.org/donate/

http://october2011.org/ (petition here, too, though I have little hope for online petitions)

You can also take up a collection where you live or raise money from your email list.

Also, you don't have to stay overnight to support them. You can go to an "occupy" nearest you for as much time as you are able to stand with them.

Or send them some pizzas--the good kind, not the granite ones.

SOLIDARITY.
