WH suspect charged with assassination attempt
Source: CBS News/AP

An Idaho man accused of firing two shots at the White House last week has been charged with attempting to assassinate President Barack Obama or his staff.

Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, made his first court appearance before a federal magistrate in Pittsburgh on Thursday, one day after he was arrested at a western Pennsylvania hotel. He will be taken back from a federal court in Pittsburgh to face the charges in Washington, D.C.

Ortega will remain in federal custody at least until a magistrate in Washington can determine if he should remain jailed until his trial on the charge, which carries up to life in prison.

Ortega sat quietly as the hearing began, his hands free but his feet shackled. The 21-year-old said only, "Yes, ma'am" when he was asked if he understood that he would be going back to Washington to face the charge

3. Obama was "the devil" and had to be "taken care of."
Charging documents state that Ortega-Hernandez owned an "AK-47 like gun," and that a witness who has known him said his statements about the government and Obama specifically had "gotten worse" in the past year.

Recently, according to the witness, Ortega-Hernandez had said he was "preparing for something," and that he believed Obama was "the devil" and had to be "taken care of."

23. This Man Sounds
a little (or a lot) ill to me. Classic paranoia and a completely lame "assassination" attempt? Sounds like the White House gardening crew had more to worry about from him than Obama did. Was Obama even at the White House?

4. US man charged with Obama assassination attempt

Source: BBC

The man suspected of shooting at the White House has been charged with attempting to assassinate US President Barack Obama or a member of his staff.

Oscar Ortega-Hernandez, 21, of Idaho, remains in federal custody and is to be prosecuted in Washington DC.

Mr Ortega-Hernandez believed God had given him a personal mission to attack the White House, law enforcement sources say.

A US Park Police bulletin said he was "unstable with violent tendencies".

Mr Ortega appeared in court in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Thursday afternoon, and said only "Yes ma'am" when a federal judge asked if he understood he would be moved to Washington DC to face the charges.

Very few atheists would invoke some third party to impel them to kill someone or do something drastic.

24. Accused White House shooter says he's Jesus
-----

"It's not just a coincidence that I look like Jesus. I am the modern day Jesus Christ that you all have been waiting for."

In a 20-minute video posted by CBS Affiliate KBOI, Ortega-Hernandez claims to be the second coming of Christ, and talks about Nostradamus and receiving a "message thorough time."

"When I first saw that, there was no doubt in my mind that the message sent through time was solely for me," Ortega-Hernandez said.

He reportedly told an acquaintance that President Obama planned to implant computer tracking chips into children.

26. It's interesting how paranoid schizophrenia is almost invariably expressed in religious terms.
Has there ever been a psychotic murderer or attempted murderer who claimed that he was an atheist?

30. People With
paranoid schizophrenia focus on all kinds of things, but the government and religion are the two biggies in this culture. And frequently aliens, but not as often as the other two. I suppose because these are two big authorities who are attributed with sort of mystical powers. Interestingly, the military doesn't seem to be a common focus, it's always the CIA. Granted, I work with a civilian population, but they've probably had more contact with members of the military than with the CIA.
