MacKay says no plans for Syria intervention (Canada)
Source: CBC News

Canada is watching violence in Syria but stepping in would require more thought and possibly a UN resolution, Defence Minister Peter MacKay says.

MacKay spoke about Syria hours before meeting with Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak to talk about regional security and a series of agreements on defence cooperation between Canada and Israel.

As France pulls its ambassador from Damascus, Syria's capital, and the country's suspension from the Arab League takes effect, MacKay says any possible military action needs "further contemplation" and possibly a UN Security Council resolution "to mirror the path that we followed with respect to Libya."

"There's a number of things that would have to happen. It is a much more complex situation in many ways, given the circumstances on the ground in Syria," MacKay said Wednesday morning.

1. Certainly wished that the Federal Canadian Liberals had of put some
better forward in the last election than Michael Ignatieff. They are now stuck with a majority Harper Government (unopposed) for four years.

2. Leave Syria to fight its own battles.
Every day I get reports from their front on my FB. I am witness to the most profound bravery and patriotism. We owe it to them to let them win their fight for freedom on their own terms. This is not Iran.

BTW, TNC in Libya was worst possible thing to happen. Bunch of characterless, self-righteous Gadhafi men now rule the nation with a fist as forceful as his was. The inevitable result of imperialist adventure.

3. Oh please...
In a country where Gaddafi rule with an iron fist for 42 years some links to the past regime were inevitable.

The Libyans seem happy with the new arrangement:

5. Small scale clashes against former regime loyalists.
A settling of scores is inevitable after conflicts like this one. Happened after the American Revolution, happened after World War II, happened after Vietnam...

7. Rig for who? Why?
Besides, if Gaddafi is right there are so many tribes in Libya that they cannot do without Dear Leader. I'm betting he's wrong and Libya will have cleaner elections that ours American one's.
