SF ChronicleSanta Clara University's computerized academic record system was hacked, and more than 60 current and former undergraduate students' grades were altered for the better, university officials said Monday.
Officials began investigating the hacking in early August, when a former student noticed one of the grades on her transcript was different than she remembered. Within a few days, officials contacted the FBI, said Dennis Jacobs, Santa Clara's provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Investigators determined that the hacking took place between June 2010 and July 2011, Jacobs said. After looking at records dating back to 2000, investigators found that about 60 former students' grades were changed for the better, with the oldest change dating back to 2004.
"Immediately, as we discovered this incident, we took measures to increase the security of all our data networks," Jacobs said. "We are working to re-establish the integrity of the grade system here."
