ack Heyman, a recently retired business agent for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union local 10, drove through the Port of Oakland and called in the following statement to Truthout at 9:25 AM Pacific time:

"The port of Oakland is effectively shut down. None of the ships are being worked. There is limited trucking activity by non-union workers but the port is effectively shut down. Trucks waiting to pick up containers are backed up over a mile," Heyman said. The truck backup was confirmed by the Oakland Tribune.

Many union workers are not feeling well today, and some may have called in sick.

Many folks have not been able to make it to work or school today.

This is apparently a virulent strain of flu; Oakland seems to be the epicenter of the epidemic at the moment.

The CDC (National Center For Democratic Control) predicts a long lasting widespread nationwide epidemic.

The recovery rate for this flu is 100%.

6. I must say, they do expect contract to be upheld by port,

why not uphold their end "running the port / completing the work"? If it was contract negotiation or something dealing with just their business and contract, then I would be 100% behind them, I am just worried that an un-authorized and un-voted on strike will have repercussions that we may not be able to see yet. But that is just my worry in this situation.

They sound like an overprotective mother most of the time. Don't break the rules because only the rich and powerful are allowed that. Stay peaceful no matter what because the oligarchy has the franchise on violence, so we wouldn't want to break their contract. Above all make sure you lose on every issue so you can continue to lose on every substantive issue. That way you can always play the victim. When are people realize that you can't win if you play by all the rules because the rules are rigged.
By the way there is no law against not going to work. I think this is covered under the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

16. Update: Oakland port prepares for thousands of 'Occupy" general strike protestors

Port of Oakland Director of External Affairs Isaac Kos-Read said all seven marine terminals at the port are at least partially operational today.

Jordan said it has been estimated that some 5,000 people will march on the port later today and that police will facilitate the march to help the group get to their destination safely.

Some "Occupy Oakland" protesters have vowed to shut down the port tonight, but Kos-Read declined to say what action would be taken to prevent that.
"We'll deal with that situation if it comes up," he said.

In an open letter to the community of Oakland issued on Tuesday, port officials stressed that workers at the port are also part of the 99 percent, and that the port is interested in contributing to the civic dialogue initiated by the Occupy Oakland movement.

OAKLAND, California — Thousands of anti-Wall Street protesters marched in the streets of Oakland on Wednesday as they geared up with labor unions to picket banks, take over foreclosed homes and vacant buildings and disrupt operations at the nation's fifth-busiest port.

Demonstrators in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia said they planned to hold solidarity actions Wednesday. In Seattle, protesters planned to descend on a speech scheduled Wednesday evening by Chase Bank's chief executive officer.

In Oakland, demonstrators, elected officials and business leaders expressed optimism that the widely anticipated "general strike" would be a peaceful event for a city that last week became a rallying point after police used tear gas to clear an encampment outside City Hall and then clashed with protesters in the street. An Iraq War veteran was injured in the melee.

A morning march of 1,000 people down Broadway to the State Building was loud but peaceful, according to NBC station KNTV. Police presence was minimal, officials said.

air freight has been shut down. Both UPS and Fed Ex have large operations out there. Lots of smaller air freight companies and corporate planes fly out of both the commercial and small aircraft divisions.

25. Update: Port director: Maritime operations effectively shut down

Port director Omar Benjamin says Port is effectively shut down, but pledges a return of normal port operations. He asks for protesters to allow workers to safely go home.

"The world is watching Oakland tonight and we need to make sure this is a safe place for everyone," City Administartor Deanna Santana says in massive call for violence-free protests tonight.
